March 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

This month is absolutely torching too, just for good measure. Minneapolis is running a +11.5 anomaly. Just unending.

Climate change appears to be accelerating more and more with baselines shifting. The big Nino this winter probably kicked things up a notch.

There is that weird morbid sense of anticipation that I now have with every warm season. The termination shock from the lack of sulfur dioxide exhaust from shipping, water vapor from Tonga, and the ever growing cumulative impact of climate change are making for a slow moving disaster movie.

The ENSO plunge is really underway now.  Major cold upwelling along the coast of South America spreading westward.

When do the raindrops start falling from the sky again? Friday?

I wish my unending torches included a potential 2 foot snowstorm like Minneapolis might have this weekend.

Temps don't look too impressive back there. A drop in the bucket next to the completely historic torching they've posted for the first 2/3 of the month. Nice for them to avoid an all-time bad snow season though.

The last cooler than average month for MSP was April 2023.

Well the worst is over and now we have this thing mostly in the rearview mirror. Of course temps worked out in a way that even the most caffeinated of warm enthusiasts would hardly dare draw up. Five straight 70+ for PDX, which ties the March record. A post 5pm record high for them on Sunday even after it looked like we were out of the woods, and an impressive, late blooming peak of 77 yesterday (also a record high). Both without any help from offshore flow. Saturday hit 75+ too of course, so three straight 75+ for them. Only their second time on record to see that in March. Squeeee!!!

The sunshine was nice and I have been outdoors plenty since Friday, but good lord, it seems like every time we even touch a ridge these days this sort of thing happens.

Not to mention the nauseating slew of daily records/all-time monthly records up north. The Quillayute number was demoralizing.

I’m going to focus on the fact that VUO put up a relatively reasonable and impressively spready: 71/36, 76/38, 75/38, 74/39 the last four days. Neat to see them recover into the 30s every night despite afternoons in the 70s, and peak at 76 on Saturday with a slow cooling trend afterward even while PDX continued to ramp things up.

If it makes you feel any better I only peaked to 65 degrees. Hit mid to low 30s every night.

The station nearby me hit 80 yesterday. I'm not sure if it's slightly overexposed but that's crazy for March. Also a low of 50 degrees on Saturday with the east wind.

I agree. SLE went up like 3 degrees after 5p yesterday to tie a record.

64/38 today. Thought we might end up a little cooler than yesterday but looks like we will end up about the same. The last few days have been really nice. It has been weird having such a unseasonal stretch of warm and dry weather. However the return to March climo will be much appreciated. Need whatever mountain snows and valley rains we can get the next few weeks.

I haven't been outside since last Tuesday when it was chilly and raining.

I have to be inside to post here on my 8-bit Commodore 64.   I have heard about these smart phone things that allow you to have internet access outside but that sounds scary to me so I will wait a couple more years.

And 72 in North Bend away from the cooling influence of the Sound... but down to 69 now.
