With the MJO active and seasons changing, I find it hard to believe this regime of western troughing will be as stable as modeled.

There should be at least 7-10 days with a western ridge and eastern trough next month, most likely between the 10th and the 20th. Maybe I’m wishcasting but I don’t see why the current pattern wouldn’t change when the MJO returns to the W-Hem 10-15 days from now.

They’re correct that the NE-Pacific blobs are associated with +NAO, because +NAO constructively interferes with the leading EOF of +TNH (loading pattern).

We moved into a more +NAO intradecadal regime in 2013, which coincided with the termination of the -PMM/-TNH era (which had started in 2006/07 and lasted until 2011/12).

In recent years the +NAO regime has attenuated into a more neutral state, hence the reduced frequency of +TNH and slow decay of the NE-Pacific warm blob thru the 2020s. Though I suspect the “blob” will return when the IPWP extends again (sooner rather than later) unless the teleconnection between WPAC forcing and +NAO/+TNH can be broken or disrupted somehow.

Really wet morning, it's been raining steadily for the past few hours. 1.41" of rain on the month so far as of this morning and probably a decent bit more today.

I’ve noticed the long range ensembles seem to be hinting at a warmer pattern starting around 5/10. It would sort of make sense timing wise. I’m glad we’re getting a solidly cool and wet pattern in beforehand.

I'm trying to get them to comp a cruise for my wife just in case I'm gone before the next chance we have to save up for one. Hopefully a 14-nighter next time.

I've enjoyed the couple of cruises I've been on, but that would be a bit much for me. Maybe if like half the nights were spent onshore different spots.

That sounds like a great plan! The period you would be in Florida would also be the clearest part of the year there and you wouldn’t have to deal with hurricanes . I eventually want to retire somewhere warm and Florida is in top of the list.

Steady rain has ended here after a wet morning. Current temp is 49 after a low of 42. Have picked up .40” today, just shy of 2” on the month now. A strong shower later this afternoon could get me there.

12z EPS is in excellent agreement with the operational over the next week. Starting to look like we could get a decent rain event over Cinco de Mayo 🪇

Been a really nice spring so far with plenty of variety in weather. Hope to see that continue with the active MJO.
