It is similar in a number of ways. We just missed getting major cold in December that winter. It got chilly here, but we were on the edge of it. And the big Buffalo lake effect snowstorm started today in 2014 as well. I don't think this winter will be like 2014/15 though, I feel like we'll have a better chance this year That winter had two incredible cold shots out this way. Never before had we dropped below zero in mid-February on cold advection alone/no decoupling. Not to mention bare ground at the time, as well. There was so much cold air around that despite being in the warm sector with southerly winds it was snowing and 18°F at midday. That simply isn’t supposed to happen here. Would have been rare even in the 19th century. 3 Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=

And it snowed in December, which seems almost impossible these days. 1 Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=

Gradient Keeper
Pressure Gradients - UPDATE Offshore gradients have ticked back upward this evening as high pressure strengthens a bit over the Columbia Basin. In response the east winds have ramped up again and at my location near west Gresham I am now experiencing bursts of loud, roaring gusts that are close to rivaling the east wind storm Wednesday night through Thursday morning. It's going to be a very windy night, but gradients should weaken slowly yet steadily tomorrow. One last night of strong wind gusts mainly east of I-205. 11 PM [Gorge/Gap Gradients] PDX-DLS: -8.7mb TTD-DLS: -8.2mb [Cross Cascade Gradients] PDX-YKM: -9.0mb PDX-MWH: -9.0mb PDX-GEG: -8.4mb OTH-GEG: -13.7mb *Legend: PDX = Portland, DLS = The Dalles, TTD = Troutdale, YKM = Yakima, MWH = Moses Lake, GEG = Spokane, OTH = North Bend A -Negative value denotes easterly/northerly flow A +Positive value denotes westerly/onshore flow What's a Pressure Gradient? A pressure gradient measures the difference in Barometric Pressure between two locations. For example, PDX pressure is currently 30.38 in and The Dalles is at 30.62 in. Higher pressure at The Dalles and lower pressure at Portland induces an east wind through the Gorge.
