PNW December 2022, winter might be coming; but mostly canceled.

Somehow temps are climbing even here. HIO and nearby stations shot up to 39-40F. Just a few miles west of those stations, things are in the mid 30s and if you go out towards Banks they are just around freezing. The places that are right on the edge of the Coast Range have decoupled and managed to really cool off.

Weird day in Southern California today. We were in a dry sector between an AR to our north and an AR to our south. Made it into the low 70s here while Phoenix was rainy and in the low 50s at the same time. That huge low off the coast is causing very strange weather.

Weird regime right now.

In reality you are trading colder temps for lower dew points.  When the precip arrives it will all balance out.

Fair enough. I noticed the 10 PM PDX NWS AFD is a total copy/paste from early this morning. They are literally still talking about the 06z and 12z runs from 12-18 hours ago. Strange. They clearly don't seem concerned about any potential with this.

Weird that the NWS is so confident in not seeing much. They issued a WWA for that midweek overnight thing but not for this

SEA recorded 2.6 inches for the day, and they are up to 4.4 for the season now.  Since November 1 they have eaten up about 150 degrees of the 350 degrees of excess temperature they accumulated July through October.

The SEA NWS is being stingy also.  I actually have a decent feeling about this one.  We'll see I guess.

That is crazy! I mean, I know back in October I said I was expecting some wind for the Hawks/Niners Game near the Annniversary of the Hannukah Eve Storm of 2006, but 966? On the 16 year anniversary? That's nuts even if it doesn't verify.

And then the possibility of arctic air just a few days later? Better make sure the generator is tuned up!

Watching the Dec 12-14 timeframe for something good.

Deep cold builds in Northern Territories and eastern AK around Dec 8-10, then -PNA/-NAO ridge bridge threatens to send it into the area. Small tweaks could mean a quick, sharp Arctic event.

Just blown away how this keeps going on.  There are past examples of winters like this, but few and far between.  We will still need January to make it complete though.  It really seems possible we could pull that month off this winter.

The big -NAO gives this a 1968-69 type flavor.  Huge minus NAO that winter and it crushed us.  I went for years thinking -NAO was bad for the West until I really looked at it.

Wouldn't it be ironic if after this last half decade of February-dominated winters, we get a NDJ centered winter?

True. I just remember how wet I was from the pouring rain the wind blew sideways on the way to the game and then the crazy wind on the drive home. Front was facing the wind and soaked. Back was away from the wind and dry. And got home after picking up our 1.5 year old and heading home to the dark. Had to keep the fire going but luckily we only lost power for a little over a day. Had to sleep in the living room to stay away from the greenbelt in the back of the house and just having memories of a hurricane when I was little.

The 6z ICON has way impressive coverage over the South Sound than the 0z.  Probably not pushing moisture quite as far north as what will happen though.

Canadian goes insane with blocking, but gets messy with cutoffs. A cleaner pattern would probably be quite cold as the main ridge axis establishes itself right in the sweet spot.

Really it's all quite cold. It feels like this Spring where we can only do good. Cold air keeps being reinforced while there are no real warm mixing patterns to scour it out. Highs struggling to find 40F may be the norm and not the exception this month.
