PNW December 2022 - Part II

It's no 43 degree drop in 10 minutes like Colorado and Wyoming just had, but there's a pretty neat temperature differential going on on the coast right now where the Gorge outflow meets the warmer air. Weird to see such a huge difference with no elevation change and only a couple miles apart.

And here's an even sharper one down by Lincoln City, where the cold air is seeping through the pass there:

Picked up about 1/2” of snow/sleet and maybe 0.1-0.2” ice last night into today. Not quite enough to walk around on the top of my 5-6” of snowpack, but still fun.

I spent the night down in North Seattle where there was just a touch less ice. Fortunately I was parked near a main arterial so there was only a hundred feet or so until the driving wasn’t too bad.

29f but for the first time since over night I have a shower moving over us.  Doesn't really show up on radar but it's the worst road and walking conditions so far.   Been fortunate that what we had was a mix of sleet and ZR earlier and wasn't too bad walking.  Now, it's a good coating of just ZR.   Even my chickens went into the coop early to roost and screamed, "Crystal Lave, Crystal Lava"!

46/22 day here.

Still pretty chilly down in the South Valley with EUG only sitting at 34. Surprisingly Corvallis still hasn't cracked freezing and is at 30.

Offshore winds were extremely impressive from this event. Perhaps not at PDX's official station as much, but Corbett likely scored its strongest winds since just before the big February 1996 floods. The PDX-DLS gradient topped out at just over a massive 15 mb, which is really only below Christmas Eve 1983.

Impressive but extremely shallow, at least down south.  I hardly had anything I would call a breeze here, 10-15 mph max.

Yeah, not sure if he has family down there or just an affinity for the area/climate.

Slowly but steadily warming here. Getting a bit toasty. 25.7F with a ZR mist.

This could have easily been a much higher impact event here if there was more precip overnight, the models that were weak on QPFs were indeed correct with this. The euro generally did pretty decent with this event except the GFS correctly called that most of the precip would be sleet and not a ton of ZR.

Definitely some moisture pushing in-- should start to see things glaze over for a miserable commute anywhere east of the river. Possibly even west of as well for a while.

This storm was something! Very short lived snow, but this had to be the coldest afternoon I can remember. This stacks up to Dec 2013 in Klamath Falls, only difference is we didn't dip to -20, but we struggled to get much over 0 the entire day today. The 6 hour high/low is 3/-3 on observations.

Note that we were mid 40's at midnight but I cannot get myself to put that as today's actual high. lol That front couldn't just happen a few hours sooner.

The last couple weeks have been impressively chilly up here. Today was my 12th straight day with lows in the 20s and 8 of those days had highs below 40F. Since the start of the arctic blast on Sunday my weather has been:

12/18: 39.5/22.8 (0.75" snow)
12/19: 24.0/21.4 (2.5" snow)
12/20: 27.6/21.0 (6" snow)
12/21: 22.8/5.9 (Tr snow)
12/22: 25.1/5.2 (Tr snow)
12/23: 38.7 (current temp)/22.3 (0.5" snow, 0.2" ice)

The event last December featured 4 sub-freezing highs (with a min max of 17.5F and a fifth day with a high of 32.2F), three days in the single digits with a minimum temperature of 6.6F, and 13.5" of snow. So pretty comparable to this week also with 4 sub-freezing highs, two days in the single digits, and 9.75" snow. Perhaps the duration of December 2021 was one day greater and a bit colder for highs, but otherwise two incredible winter storms two years in a row!

It's inevitable. I like to think 2020-21 was our regional dud for the decade, it just happened to have 3 fantastic days from PDX - north.

The torching first half of that winter was pretty crazy. First half of January at PDX was outright warmer than nearly every station in northern CA (and they were still above average!)

Even crazier that it was a Niña / +QBO winter. Yet it almost certainly would have been a complete dud sans SSW.

46/22 day here.

Still pretty chilly down in the South Valley with EUG only sitting at 34. Surprisingly Corvallis still hasn't cracked freezing and is at 30.

A little bit of warm-tongue/cold-tongue going on in the valley with the east side running 1-2 degrees warmer.

Definitely expected to be above freezing by now, although with the main roads mostly clear and no major precip incoming I guess it's OK...
