January Weather In the PNW

Winter in terms of a parade of storms with rain and wind... does not look too impressive even at day 10 with any arctic air up north.

A more active pattern could lead to better things down the road...or not. I will take it over ridging and split flow regardless.

That’s literally a super niño pattern.

Will have to check the d10 SV analogs for the 12z Euro when I get the chance.

I expect a few 1980s La Niñas mixed in with a bunch of strong/super El Niños.

I don't think an arctic blast and tons of lowland snow has ever been more a sure thing.   Its all but guaranteed now.   Believe me... I am, like, really smart.

Typical boring January

Really is.   I guess we used up our January greatness last year in Portland.   Now we wait another quarter of a century.

Yea really though january in this region really has turned into a bore. Hardly anything memorable ever happens in the heart of winter here

The old time settlers would be shocked and utterly amazed at how mild and spring-like our January climate has become.   Those propaganda reports in the newspapers from the mid-19th century would be much more accurate now.    No longer fake news.    ;)

That actually was a very memorable week in the middle of January 2012.

Ridiculous amount of snow here and then an ice storm from hell.

My wife and I lived in Puyallup. Thats wasn't an "ice storm from hell". Puget sound folk don't know what that is.

Maybe not down there... but it was the worst I have seen here by a long shot.

Lots of tree damage.

Again, that wasn't an ice storm from hell anywhere around there. Puget sound folk don't know what one of those is.

6 years is a long time to be in the dog house. Some felons serve less time. Ask Dewey.

I guess January has actually fared better down here since. January 2013 was well below average with 5-6 sub-freezing highs at SLE, and of course last January was words better in W. Oregon.

A bunch of January 2006 analogs on the CPC list from earlier today.

Good sign.

I’d be down. Would love to go back and re-live that February.

As aforementioned, though, definitely more -QBO analogs showing up on both the CPC & SV site now. It’s trying..

That week in January 2012 was awesome! Stayed all snow up this way while people down south had to deal with ice.

Also the daily PNA forecast continues to look even better for later January!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Anyone else here going to AMS in Austin? I'm flying out tonight. Would be neat to meet up.

Well, I’ll being sharing the same air as you. Heading to Austin Tomarrow. Wife is taking her Mom in for a few doc appointments in Austin while I watch over her house in Bastrop for a few days.

Although I’ve been to a FSX convention...flight simulator dude here I’ve never done a meteorology gathering. Looks interesting and something I should do someday. Unfortunately it’s taking place on the days I’m standing duty.

Have a great time and safe travels

That was a very respectable ice storm her in Federal Way! I remember the news casters saying it’s going to warm up with south winds kicking in like usual. But that didn’t happen. That’s was a crazy fun storm and it lasted quite a while.

Perhaps a January 16, 2000 redux this year?

I just looked the following year, 2000/01.

All I can say is..holy sh*t. Pattern match is scary good.

It’s the best QBO/MQI analog for -ENSO in the modern era. Solar is meh, but still:
