I stumbled across this place a while ago looking for info on an upcoming weather event only to see a group of people looking for the most-extreme result possible. It was never about snow, winter, etc. — it’s always about something to remember with ya’ll. Unfortunately, something to remember wreaks havoc with the real world ... where this forum doesn’t seem to live.

I just got back in from the barn checking on my livestock. They are ok so far. Since my last post it has dropped 3° to -13°.

I’ll be sure to check in this summer after a tornado levels a small town to see how you guys are celebrating. Sure you’ll be leading the charge.

Be sure to also note that when the weather is picture perfect around here, along with it comes increased crime from the gang bangers. So come spring/summer when the weather turns and there’s an uptick in murders, just remember you’re getting exactly what you wished for.

 

Now do you see how asinine you sound? Well do ya?

Long time lurker, first time poster.  I really enjoy the information provided on this forum.

 

I know this is a weather forum but I have a couple solutions for those who struggle to find warmth in the cold (this is for southeast Wisconsin): a warming shelter in the Milwaukee area is at 8100 W Capitol Drive in Milwaukee.  Lyft is offering free transportation to warming shelters with the code "WIJAYDEN19."  Don't forget to check on the elderly, neighbors, pets.  Finally, keep up with prayers for those struggling to find warmth for themselves or loved ones.

 

If anybody has any solutions for warming shelters in your areas, please feel free to provide suggestions.

 

Again, thanks to everyone's dedication to weather on here.  It really is a breath of fresh air.

You're coming on a weather enthusiast board and questioning our hobby. Are you expecting anyone on here to agree with you? What are you trying to achieve? Like I said earlier, you've got to be trolling, even if you don't think you are. There's no other reason for posting this kind of crap here.

 

Also, nobody here roots for death and destruction. It's just part of natural disasters and there's nothing we can do about it. None of us want to see a major tornado hit a metropolis. Weather is just fascinating and thrilling. I absolutely HATE driving in snow in my POS car. I still love snow though.

Again, can it. What about watching a tornado hit 5 of your family member's homes on the same day in different locations? What about walking through (and living/growing up) near ground zero of both the first major terrorist attack on the U.S. AND the single most destructive tornado recorded on the face of earth? Several of the places that my memories were made do not exist anymore.

 

I had more understanding and appreciation for the value of a human life and what horrible things, events, and breathtaking tragedies can do to it by the time I was 15 than most people understand after going to war or living for 40 years. I also understand more about Gods grace, pure heroism and selfless, thankless love because I have witnessed those things. In these states no one cares about, there are GREAT people who do MIGHTY things in the face of adversity because we understand both wrath and grace, fear and peace and we give one another hope when and where its needed.

My goodness, I just stepped outside to get a "feel" for this cold and it felt like I just walked into another world!  Interestingly, the sound of planes flying over head is notably different.  In all seriousness, this is some epic cold.  However, there is beauty that comes with snow and cold weather around Chicago.  For instance, this areal shot shows the city buried underneath a blanket of snow and ice flows forming on Lake Michigan.  #chiberia

While our attention is primarily focused on this historic cold wave, once it begins to relax, a Clipper is poised to traverse the region and models are getting wetter/snowier so I decided to start a thread.

Here at my house I now have a temperature of -3.4° and light snow is still falling at this time. I have 6″ of new snow fall and here at my house. I have to say it looks like a winter wonder land out there this morning with snow everywhere. and the way it is on the trees, all over the cars and the window sills. I have a total of 16″ of snow on the ground at this time. Added information from the Grand Rapids area today’s CoCoRahs readings from Metro Grand Rapids for total snow on the ground at this time are MI-KN-33 15″ MI-KN-32 16.5″ MI-KN-14 17.0″ MI-KN-7 16.0″ MI-KN-93 16.0″ and then we have GRR coming in at a reported 10.0″ any one ever wonder if at a NWS office they send some one out to take a reading or do they have a machine do it?? my guess is they have a machine do the readings.

The official readings from GRR as of 7 AM January 26.0″ since Dec 1 29.2″ for the winter season 43.1″ that is now just -5.1″ for the winter season. The latest mean temperature at GRR for January is 23.5° and that is good for -0.9° so for the month Grand Rapids is now colder than average

Just spent a good hour or so shoveling the snow that feel a couple of days ago.  I was all bundled up with my ski jacket, mask and layers of clothing.  It wasn't too bad actually if your out moving around.  After I finished, I decided to take a stroll through the neighborhood and local park.  I was mesmerized by the beauty of the deep snow and "tunnels" created throughout the neighborhood sidewalks and the parks walk way.  Gotta enjoy the beauty while you have it and soak it all in.  Time to eat a hot bowl of soup!

Last night I took some measurements and had an average snow depth of about 11.5" and with the snow that is excepted later tonight, a solid 1' or a bit more will be the max I see during this rather impressive wintry stretch this month.  It all started back on Jan 11th when we saw that strong, slow moving S MW system.  We'll have to see how much of a beating the high ratio snows will take.  Although, the bottom half of the snow is rock hard from the freezing drizzle which created a layer of ice on top of the snow.

I would say that the entire deep snow pack in my area is high moisture, low ratio, and very solid. So it should take awhile to melt it except in open areas where a lot of snow blew away. Could be some flooding if it melts to rapidly during a rain event. It's very difficult to walk through this snow except where I can stay on top of hard drifts without breaking through!

For the first time a while there are clear skies here at my house. Officially at GRR it has snowed now for 10 days in a row and at the GRR during that time 25.4” of snow has fallen with a reported 14” now on the ground. Here at my house during that time a total of 33.5 has fallen and I have between 15 and 19” on the ground with a mean of 17.5” Generally with clear skies the temperature here at my house is colder then the airport but today that is not the case at GRR the temperature is reported at -10 while here at my house I have -5.2 at my “cold” spot and -5.1 at my “warmer” spot either way that is rounded off to -5°  Now the biggest question is will it reach 50 during this warm up?

With the clipper a whiff to my south (as expected), I finish January with 21.7" which is about 180% of normal. Very nice for a month that didn't get going until the 9th, the same exact date Nov got going. Strange parallel??

I finished January with 21.9" of snow, 3x avg.  This is only the second time I've recorded a 20" month since I began keeping track in 2007.  My season total is up to 25.8".

 

My snow depth is about 15 inches of beautiful, dry, sparkly powder, as deep as it ever gets here.

Picked up 2 inches last night with snow cover right at 14 inches. what a way to end January. It has been a stretch of snow/cold that I will remember for awhile

Snow depth here and in a lot of Nebraska 0.0.  Kind of depressing when we see the large amounts east of here.

Looking at the January data, Dubuque’s average temp was 15.6* (3.4* below normal), total precip was 2.82” (1.65” above normal), and total snowfall was 24.3” (14.3” above normal).

 

No surprise, but looks like the Quad City area did the best in the DVN for January. Moline, IL had 30.2” of snow for the month, which was a record.

January wrap. At Grand Rapids January 2019 had a mean temperature of 21.8° and that was a departure of -2.8° the high for the month was 51 on the 7^th and the low was -10 on the 31^st There were 5 nights were the low dropped below zero. The high was 32 or lower on 22 of the days and all 31 days fell below 32 for the low. The month had 30.5” of snow fall and now Grand Rapids has had 33.7” since December 1^st and for the season Grand Rapids is now at 48.1” of snow fall in the last week we have made up a good amount of the snow fall deficit and are now just -1.9” for the winter season Grand Rapids is now ahead of the total snow fall to date from last winter when Grand Rapids ended the season with 77.7”

I ended the month of Jan. with a ridiculously small amount of 1" of snow. Hopefully the next two months can be a little more interesting for my area. I'm running at half my average for the year with about 15" of snow so far.

We have to hope the next 2 months the pattern shifts farther west.  Models just want to move things through and develop to our east.  Euro looks to maybe give us a chance next Thursday.  Holding out hope.

After some early hits out there (while us further east were snoozing), the opposite seems to be happening. It's brutal as was our 6 wk winter hiatus, but it will eventually end. Right?

Hastings NWS posted a snowfall map for the month of January, which shows very little snow north and west of Omaha and Lincoln. Not going to try to post it since half the people can't see when I post pics lol. But Nebraska City is definitely the big winner, receiving 10-12" in the same 2 storms that gave Omaha and Lincoln 4-6".

I ended up with 21.2" of snow for the month of January, boosting my season to date total to 35.7"! That's already more than the winter season normal total. Quite a bit for this area. Liquid equivalent total this month was approximately 3.32".

Yeah, the QC area has been gold this winter.  Moline broke both the November and January snowfall records.  Their season total is 49.7".  I did very well in January, but I've still received only half of what Moline has.
