January 2019 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Very wind sheltered here from S winds, yet winds just started to roar here in the West Hills. Getting April 2017 vibes :)

A little science into why the wind burst will be sudden/strong overnight. It's not just the track & depth of the surface low that matters. A sudden rise in pressure occurs behind it. Rate of change of pressure on a map is called an "isallobar" & 4+ millibars in a hour is hefty.

Sometimes I’m too dramatic with talking about storms with my family . Wife is currently filling every jug with water and hot thermos bottles with hot water. Unsure of her intentions

If we get an earthquake during the windstorm we’re good on water here :)

Better safe than sorry.

In all seriousness though, we have several cases of MRE's for prolonged power outages and any serious disaster that may occur plus lots of water.

I think I’m bullish. Pressure surges are responsible for at least 90% of our high wind events (enhanced by mountain waves).

If this is anything similar, then it could be interesting.

Here's the track of the surface low pressure over the past few hours based on surface observations from airports, buoys, and ships. Best estimate for maximum wind timing in Seattle metro right now - rapidly rising after 2 AM and peaking around 4 AM. #wawx

(not sure how to show the GIF, but the point is the time estimate for Seattle).

Anyone have the 12Z EURO map for PDX (wind-wise)? I want to know the timing on this thing.

Should be very soon... the maps are in 6-hour increments and the wind was at the doorstep of Portland at 10 p.m.

4mb/hr should make for very efficient vertical momentum transfer, even in the dead of night.

For PDX too? Region-wide?

For anyone experiencing said pressure rise (and not completely blocked by high terrain).

That’s probably region-wide. Cool stuff. Wind is close here, going to ramp up within the next hour for sure.

Completely dead calm here. I wonder what causes the calm before the storm. The storm must counteract the typically small breezes that you would see on a normal day.

Pressure falls/warm advection within the warm sector of the low in the absence of solar insolation? Might be tough to mix down the good winds until the pressure surge arrives.

At least that’s how it works here. I don’t know about your microscale stuff/topography.
