October 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Even though we all know Feb 2019 was pretty snowy in most areas, it also did fairly strange things. On the day Redding gets a foot of snow it was raining moderately in Klamath Falls. :P But soon after it changed back to snow. I forget what day that was, there were a handful of separate snow events that month. Somebody in Tacoma had more snow depth than I did as well. My max depth was only 9.5" the whole month.

21.0" was the most I've ever had on the ground here (Jan 2017), and I think before I came to town that was the highest since the 90's.

We had 52.2" of snow in February.

That’s insane. We had maybe...5.0 inches if I’m being extra generous. Really shows the insane disparity that last year presented.

Depths are very hard to maintain in my town in comparison to places like Central OR, I'm pretty confident the last 24-30+ inch depth here was in Jan 1993.

Pretty sure we had over 40 inches on the ground on the day we managed to escape to SEA and then Kauai.    The drive from our house to Issaquah was straight out of a movie.    It was crazy... even on I-90 we were driving through a one-lane tunnel with abandoned cars and semis everywhere.

Then once we got to Issaquah... just 12 miles away... it was raining and the freeway was bare and wet.

It was actually 20” the first 2” that fell on February 4th had compacted and melted, so 20” was my max depth my mistake. 22” was my total for February with another 1.5” in March to go to 23.5” for the season.

It snowed 9” on 2/9, 5” on 2/10 and 6” on 2/11.

Silver Falls had a 47" depth in January 2008, given we usually get more snow it was probably in the 50-55" range here at the house. Would have been something to see. I'm sure I will one of these years.

With the February/March stuff we never really had one big event, just tons of light to moderate snowfalls. 18 days with measurable snow in February and another 5 in March.

I measure depth on my deck, it is just a consistent spot that is pretty representative of the property and easy to measure. It is where I keep my snow board too. There were shaded spots in the yard and on the roof of my shop (unfortunately) that were up around 3'.

We're fine just to the east of Eugene in Springfield in that case, esp as you get to Thurston.

Well your area is a lot colder than mine, but we have much more available precip. We had 95.5" of snow in January 1969, I'm not sure K-Falls has ever had that in a season.

1955-1956 gave the old station 100.6" but yeah I don't think any other official station since then has ever broken 90". Though there are some people that are barely in city limits that sometimes get about 10-20 percent additional accumulation compared to a station. 1993 could have had a spread somewhere between 80-95".

Just think in 1880 we would have had no idea it was coming, and after it happened we would have had no idea why it had happened.

Fear mode was probably high! Even with all the information we have now days we still get caught with our pants down but can’t imag8ne how they must of felt.  Crazy storm

Up to 61F. Should get a closer to avg temp today but still probly a negative departure. Should be somewhat chilly but fairly comfortable at the Duck game tonight. Looking forward to going.

Bent back occlusion brought snow to the valley in onshore flow? lol

I think so. From the article.

"In Marion County, winds raged for four hours, and the roof of the State House in Salem was damaged. As the winds faded, snow started sifting down [6]. The following day, seven inches adorned the capitol grounds in a peaceful display that seemed to deny the previous gale. Further south, in Lane County, Eugene reported little or no damage, and had four to five inches of snow."
