Part I - January 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

YEP!!  Sorry Oregon! And yeah WA looks to potentially get screwed to on this run.... Drum roll please — Gobs of cold air to tap into though, could work out better in later runs!   LOTS OF POTENTIAL!!!

High risk, high reward thread-the-needle type situation on the 00z.

 

Tons of cold air in BC and multiple lows riding the boundary with heavy snow North of them. 00z brings the lows mainly South of Puget Sound for a perfect Seattle snowstorm but it's the definition of playing with fire.

Classic setup for WA. Low coming in at the mouth of the Columbia with bitter air in BC. Would love to see this storm keep on the same track but get stronger.

 

Of course, this is the definition of playing with fire with warm air so close but if it works out right could be nice snow amounts on the north side of that thing.

Well hey look for the pdx folks next weekend hasn't been anything other than extremely marginal so this is an improvement here for the Mon-Thu type stuff.

 

Also it doesn't look poised to dig the trough out over the ocean.

Cold air driving south much easier on this run with the help of a fully bridged block over the GOA and AK/Arctic. A trend gif of the last four/five runs shows this nicely.

 

Looks similar to what the GFS was showing a couple days ago.

 

 

If that ridge bridge strengthens...

Geez that low is bombing and there are major cross cascade gradients.

We are getting closer. The GFS is showing stronger heights at 500mb over Alaska which allows the polar boundary to phase with the arctic boundary much better as those shortwaves drop down the B.C.
