July 2020 Observations and Discussion

Awesome! Glad to hear all went well and your garden got a good drink. BTW, how is your garden coming along??

Coming along real well! Should be picking cucumbers here in the next couple weeks, my potatoes are flowering like crazy, and tomato plants are coming along nicely! I was a little worried earlier in June; we had lots of windy days and my tomatoes really took a beating. Fortunately it looks like they’re gonna be just fine.

Can't wait to taste some of my family members tomatoes and cucumbers!  My raspberries are so sweet and delicious!  Great time of year.

Long Range HRRR paints some training storms in your area and into the KC region...that would be fun to track back to back MCS's...

Portions of Northeast NE and west IA have been “upgraded” to D1 drought. Most of SE NE has been fortunate to be in the path of storms at least. I’m also visiting my parents back in MS at the moment, so it’s always nice to get a reminder that it can get much worse than Nebraska humidity - lmao.

Snowfall in Lincoln, NE:

2017-18: 21.4"   2018-19: 55.5"   2019-20: 17.6"   2020-21: 49.4"   2021-22: 5.1" 🤮

I would probably be in a abnormally dry category (D0) by now but it won’t be shown on a map since it’s such a small area. Shouldn’t really wish for a lot of rain since many parts of eastern Iowa are kind of wet with above average rainfall this summer and it’s unlikely it would hit just the small dry areas!

ORD topped out at 86F yesterday ending the streak of 90's and the longest heat wave of the season.  In fact, we tied for 2nd place the longest streak of 89F or better which stands at 11 days.  Heading up to the upper 80's today with DP's in the low/mid 60's.  Models suggest we may get clipped by some storms later this evening so we shall see.

Another bust in Omaha, surprise surprise. How about seeing another 80% chance of rain and storms and we get nothing again... it’s just getting comical now. This time the line of storms split right as it approached the Omaha metro, heavy rain and storms both north and southwest of the city - maybe this “dome” thing has some legs LOL.

Chance of drought conditions worsening in this area... 100%.

A new severe watch has been issued for north-central Iowa.  It'll be interesting to see how the storms interact with the outflow boundary that is stalled to my sw.

Barely got clipped here on the N side of Marion. Got a great shot of a shelf cloud that moved past. Hardly rained, but got some good wind.

I was planting some plants this morning when the storm passed by just to the east.  The outflow was pretty gusty and cool.

Gotta say, nothing like fresh mint from your garden. I decided to make me a delicious omelet w fresh mint from outside and man it gives a phenomenal taste.  Some blueberries and blackberries on the side as well w a cold lemonade. I guess you can call that a "Brunch."

Btw: I like my omelet spicy! ;)

Yeah the outflow stalled right over me after the storm quickly weakened. A brief moderate ene. outflow wind shifted back to the wsw. after awhile. My station currently shows 91°/75° with a h.i. of 103°! More storms apoppin. We badly NEED rain!

I had six consecutive days of 90° or higher till yesterday when I had 88°. Tomorrow should be another reprieve from the heat. (Had two 90° days in June as well.) It seems my new wx station shows a bit higher dew point than my previous one did. A bit to high IMO. That’s how stations can vary a bit, unfortunately. I notice it on weather maps as well, like IEM’s Mesoplot etc.

I’m afraid most of the storms will pass just north of me since they have a more easterly component than that morning storm.

There's a line sweeping down through central Iowa.  All of our area has a decent shot.

Yeah I noticed and was about to comment on that. Storms are plenty scattered and I can just see some passing sw. of me. Waterloo area got nailed again! Some huge hail reports. Hopefully we don’t get damaging winds. My sister’s place around 7 miles se. saw some wind damage from the storm a few days ago. They thought it was awfully windy with my brother estimating 70 mph that time, but I figure that’s guessing to high. They got a horizontal rain of around 0.70” while I had 0.08” and a nice breeze.
