July 2023 Observations and Discussion

Some showers moved across Southern Chester County this AM with some additional showers possible through later this PM. Our temperatures should rise to near normal for the first time in over a week. Our chances for a heat wave for Chesco appear to be fading as it appears we may just miss 90 on Wednesday especially across the relatively higher terrain. However, both Thursday and Friday should exceed 90 before we cool back to near normal by the end of next weekend.
Records for today: High 95 (1918) / Low 48 (1985) / Rain 1.23" (1911)

All historical weather data analytics posted by me is specifically for the climate of Chester County PA.  We continually analyze the actual raw non-adjusted NWS certified Coop observed climate data for Chester County.  There have been no post observation adjustments to any of the detailed analytics. Some record breaking heat for the Midwest at the end of the GFS run.

JOKE-- KDSM has been 106F or greater ONCE in the past  60 years . 108F in Aug of 1983.  THE MODEL (GFS) is a complete joke with MAX temps) will be lucky if KDSM comes within 10F of any MAX record in the next 10 days.--- This above graphic to climo records is like posting -40F in winter months for record lows-- not happening and the GFS has a history of feedback on warm temps.  The GFS has been like this in the summer for several years--- I wonder why???

Some storms tonight after a high of 88, kind of garden variety compared to the ones almost a week ago.

Activity looks stronger in Ohio.

Yesterday, the smoke made it down to ground level at times during the afternoon and I could smell it throughout the day.  This morning we are in the thick of it again as my morning sunrise is obscured by the smokey skies.  ORD made it up to 89F yesterday and we should hit the low 90's today and MAYBE have our 1st official "Heat Wave" of the season (3 or more consecutive 90F+ days in a row).  Let's do this!

The same here in GR. Only a little cooler.

The Monsoon has begun in the 4 corners about a week or more ago and took a while to make its way into AZ, but it appears the "Valley of the Sun" will be in a prime spot to finally get storms to blow into the valley this week!

101-103* today.
This summer is like a broken record.
It’s really taking its toll.
Pressure up for another day. 30.05. Air lousy.

16 of our last 21 days here in July have been running with below average temperatures. That will change as the next 5 days should see temps running above normal. We could see some showers this afternoon and early evening. The heat really starts to build in by Thursday with many spots in the county touching the 90 degree mark. By Thursday and Friday even the ridge areas should see a rare 90 degree reading. Below normal temps look to return again by Sunday.
Records for today: High 96 (1921) / Low 47 (1976) / Rain 2.00" (1916)

Looks like we have a decent shot at severe storms tonight. Unfortunately we'll miss it as we will be leaving shortly for a family camping trip in the Black Hills until Friday. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, and Custer State Park. Super excited!

My cousin just drove through Mr Rushmore a couple days ago!  That's awesome.  The videos he sent me were so beautiful and nice to see.

Been pretty lucky in IA this summer without oppressive dewpoints. Today is not one of them. So humid- it defies physics. KAIO- 82/84!!!  Gotta love automation.

Rain chances continue to dry up here.  It doesn't matter if the pattern changes, because all patterns are dry in 2023.

While it’s quite hot this week, this heatwave is very routine and nothing out of the ordinary. 3-5 days in the 90s with two topping out near 100, then back to average. If this is the worst of summer I’ll take it.

Not a normal summer in the KC area.

That's the EPS EFI, it ranks what the model is predicting with all its other forecasts for this time of year. 0.8 is unusual, but nothing crazy, its when you get above 0.95 you know you are really out there. The black lines show shift of tails, which shows, in a way, the relative amount of ensemble members that are outside of the model climatology. Both are useful metrics.

But...they aren't supposed to show this chart publically as far as I know lol

Currently 96 after a high of 103.
The heat is beginning to take its toll on younger trees. Haven’t seen this in a long time.

I’ll have to water a 6 yr old magnolia in the morning as it’s just too dry despite the sprinkler system. I have to water deep.  It’s down 4’.   Just incredibly dry.

Even though it's largely been an average season in eastern Kentucky.. quite the heat coming up starting tomorrow.

2 or 3 days in the upper 90's with at least 2 nights around 75 degrees. We better be in a decent storm pattern to go with that.

My 2nd cousin in DFW sent me a text yesterday he is done with the Texas Heat! LOL, he's flying to Boston to visit his sister for 10 days.  Gosh, I can't imagine what you guys have to go through down in the southern states.  It's a very warm and muggy morning, although, I must say, I do yearn for summer mornings like today...76F/70F, with a nice southerly breeze.  Your Summer days are another level!  Hang in there Andie!

The official H/L yesterday was 8/62 there was no rain fall and the sun was out 74% of the time. The highest wind gust was 27 MPH out of the west. For today the average H/L is 83/63 the record high of 100 was set way back in 1894. The record low of 46 was set in 1946. Last year the H/L was  79/57. There is an area of storms to the NW of us on the other side of the lake that should stay to the north of GR.

The is a enhanced chance of severe storms today. We shall see I was in an area of enhanced storms last Thursday and the worst of the storms were east of Flint. So, we shall see how today plays out. At the current time I have a temperature of 70 with a dew point of 65. Remember to keep a eye out for possible severe weather today.

A wide range of rain totals across the County yesterday with as little as 0.12" in Chadds Ford to near 4" in Central and Eastern sections.
We should top out short of 90 degrees today across most of the county but Thursday through Saturday we should see temps in the lower 90's for most. The heat will only pay a brief visit as has been the case this cool summer with temps likely not escaping the 70's by Sunday.
Records for today: High 99 (1940) / Low 48 (1977) / Rain 1.64" (1994)

Another beautiful morning.
It’s barely 80*, breeze, low humidity.  Just gorgeous.
However,😄 back on our head for 10 more days of 100-103.  The summer to remember.

I’m deep watering trees. May have to rob a bank to pay the water bill but can’t lose these trees.  Oh for Autumn!
