October 2023 Weather in the PNW

I woke up this AM and all of a sudden the hues in the tree canopy are starting to change. 🍂 Not sure if it was too subtle to notice before or if it really was that quick, but many trees definitely starting to make the turn now.

Oaks and beeches still deep green of course (they prob won’t turn for another month or so) but all the others have begun trending towards yellows and reds.

I was going to mention that leaves were changing last week on your live stream cam.   Definitely could tell it was fall.

In fact... it actually looks sort of bare on Phil's live camera.

Got back in early this morning. Cloudy skies and a mild morning. We had quite a bit of rain while I was gone. Over 3”, up to 3.63” on the month.

The color in New England was a bit of a letdown. People were blaming the lack of color on all the rain.

Week 2 is starting to trend cooler and perhaps active across most of the models.

Been watching this... the EPS shows a trough swinging through as well but it seems to be just part of a transition to a new round of ridging on the last few runs.

GFS is pretty dry though some cooler air does work in at times.

October can be a super wet month here, but usually isn’t. We are on track to be near our average of about 6” of rain.

I check this Issaquah cam in the spring and fall to track leaf out and fall color progression to the west.    Also happens to be right across from the boat launch on Lake Sammamish.   Looks pretty green there still.

We never really got fall foliage last year. Nothing turned or fell until well into November, after we had snow on the ground for an extended period of time. This year looks pretty normal.

I can also shrink the PWS graph. That one I coded myself. I’m definitely a bit greedy with the amount of data I want to fit in there, haha.

Just the PWS graph isn't too bad, but when it was showing the embed of the YT page, that was a bit much for my personal tastes.  That's cool you have the cam and have the link in your sig, I'll definitely be checking it out when interesting weather hits your area.

I joked with my wife that when she comes back from Tampa in a few days, she will be the cold one. But with the cold front in FL and the ridging here, it might be a good transition for her. 65F outside.

It really depends on the tree species. Was at Salmon Days last week and the trees through Old Towne are brilliant red and orange. Yellow across the mountains towards PooPoo Point. But those Cottonwoods hold green for a while.

Yeah... seems like the non-native trees planted along streets and parking lots are turning more than the native trees.     We were at Salmon Days too and those trees along Sunset are always brilliant for that event.

Current satellite picture. Check out the subtropical storm South of Alaska. I can't pronounce the name of the subtropical storm. It will be interesting to see what happens with this storm for the PNW. I know the models show it going up to Vancouver BC but maybe something may happen that the models aren't picking up.

Definitely an overperformance on rainfall today as compared to what the GFS was trying to show. Euro was closer.

All CAMs show a decent band of convection during the mid afternoon tomorrow over the Sound. The main trough axis swings through the region around as fast, if not a little faster than, the main SWly streamflow, and a band fires off as a result. Any sunbreaks will be taken advantage of and there's some decent CAPE to be found where sfc heating can occur.

A bit more sneakily, it looks like some differential advection during the main cold frontal passage tonight could spark up some isolated nocturnal thunderstorms. It's not terribly uncommon to get lightning during AR events, and this trough is starting to negatively tilt so it will be even easier. Not a likely prospect but if you're a lightning junkie like me, might be worth a few peeks at the radar.

Euro is by far the wettest model up here for the next couple days with 1-1.5" in my neck of the woods by Tuesday night. GFS shows at most 0.5" while the GEM and NAM show 0.5-1". We'll have to see which ends up verifying. Still at less than 1" on the month so it will be nice to see some heavier rainfall, especially if the Euro is correct.
