During cold wet springs, I have been known to not plant warm season veggies until the end of June and we still get decent harvests. I’m pretty sure Andrew just doesn’t have the time or energy to try. It is typically very wet in the spring until well into June (many years, obviously not this year.), and we get frost into May most years. By early September we get cold nights, very little direct sunlight, and if we have had any rain, it is just damp and never dries out. We can do great with kale, lettuce, peas, some squash, sometimes pumpkins. Tomatoes, corn, things like that are a complete lost cause. Green beans do okay. We had a very cold spring last year in 2022... and we still planted everything at the end of April and then not much growth in May but then everything absolutely exploded in early June with that wet/humid pattern and it was a crazy good year for the garden. Lack of direct sunlight on your property is obviously a specific issue not related to climate. I bet you could have a very productive garden in the right setting even in your area. We cool off very quickly on clear evenings. The soil does drain very nicely up here though. Growing up in the valley it was always muddy in the winter. Not so much up here. Though I do prefer the ground to be either frozen or covered in snow during the winter months. Everything turns brown up here much faster in the summer than it does down in the valley.
