Still can't grow much where I live.

That might be related to a lack of effort.    You have fairly long, warm summers there.   Certainly much warmer than @Port Angeles Foothiller and he does well.   My area has proven to be great for gardening.   We also grow pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon grapes on our trellises and get great results by the end of every summer.   Just doesn't make sense that you can't grow anything in your area.

During cold wet springs, I have been known to not plant warm season veggies until the end of June and we still get decent harvests.  I’m pretty sure Andrew just doesn’t have the time or energy to try.  There are tomato and cucumber varieties that will mature in less than 50 days.

I wouldnt have the time for a veggie garden either if I had 8 kids with two more on the way.

Silly comment.

My location is much more damp than his and much colder than your area. We also have very little direct sunlight on our property. It is typically very wet in the spring until well into June (many years, obviously not this year.), and we get frost into May most years. By early September we get cold nights, very little direct sunlight, and if we have had any rain, it is just damp and never dries out.

We can do great with kale, lettuce, peas, some squash, sometimes pumpkins. Tomatoes, corn, things like that are a complete lost cause. Green beans do okay.

We had a very cold spring last year in 2022... and we still planted everything at the end of April and then not much growth in May but then everything absolutely exploded in early June with that wet/humid pattern and it was a crazy good year for the garden.

Looks like Silver Falls had 6 90+ highs this summer and 17 days that hit at least 85.

Lack of direct sunlight on your property is obviously a specific issue not related to climate.   I bet you could have a very productive garden in the right setting even in your area.

I'm sorry we can't all be the best at everything like you are.

Seriously though, I've seen your garden, raised beds, full sun. I'm sure if I did that I would do better, the full sun is just not possible on this property, which makes it extremely damp on this property on all but the hottest days. By mid-September everything left in the garden just molds.

I don't know of anyone up here that has a big garden in which they grow a diverse array of garden crops like you do. Zucchini, peas, green beans, sure.

I do know several people with great gardens who live in the zone above Silverton Reservoir around 1000' or so.

Lack of direct sun would be a real bummer.    Its nice to have a time of year when everything is not damp and moldy.

This time of year there is some sunlight on some sections of the property from about 10a-2p. We cool off very quickly on clear evenings. The soil does drain very nicely up here though. Growing up in the valley it was always muddy in the winter. Not so much up here. Though I do prefer the ground to be either frozen or covered in snow during the winter months.

Our soil drains very fast and the ground is quite rocky here... which is problematic for grass.   Everything turns brown up here much faster in the summer than it does down in the valley.

at this point last year I had already had close to 9" of snow.

Snowfall here is running about 3” ahead of last year’s pace.  Last winter I had close to 60”.  Wouldn’t be surprised if we finished this season with 1/4 of that.

Satellite shows the river valley from Everett to Fall City still socked in with fog with sunshine across the rest of the Puget Sound area... also can see snow in the north and central Cascades.
