January 2024 Weather in the PNW (Part I)

Recommended Posts

Scrolling through the last 5 GEM runs for next weekend is comical.   Literally zero consistency.   Not one run was similar to the previous run.

The Americans can thank us for gifting them with the 12Z GEM.

I will be listening to Rush and watching Trailer Park Boys all weekend now in hopes that it overpowers the stupid American and European computer.

Here is the 00z last night to the 12 this morning for Saturday morning. GEM saw the EURO, UKMET, GraphCast and Spire and decided to join them!

Definitely volatile regardless. May be some surprises, who knows.

For sure... its impossible to say this event is cooked when the GEM looks this good.

I love 🇺🇸 and will always support the GFS but when your model verification scores are close to the IMD (India)🇮🇳 then you got lots of problems.

And even the terrible GFS shows overrunning snow next Saturday.

But probably falling at 30 degrees instead of -5 😞

Yeah... still going with massive high latitude blocking and a massive trapped vortex.     Just in a different position than previous runs.

I just want snow and some single digit subzero temps.  Anything below -20 risks closing the ski lifts.  Snow >>>>> bitter cold

GEM must have gotten fed new data at the 12z update and now is seeing what the others are as well.

I just don't trust its tendency to go crazy with the blocking.

The difference between the GFS and GEM a week out is about as big as it can get at that range.

But is it that detail that’s causing the problem with the cold further down the line?

Certainly don’t help, but either way we’ve got 0 idea on what’s happening. Not a bust or lock yet!

Literally zero idea.   When the first two models of the day are this different at day 8... there is no way to know what will happen.

Interesting the GFS it gets to pretty decent blocking eventually…But it just completely sharts on keeping any cold air anywhere which seems…suspect.

Everyone on this board has to start spelling in Canadian English this morning to encourage the GEM.
