December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

It's nice in these nina years to sometimes see the coast range picking up enough snow to really be able to see it. Hoping for plenty of that this Jan.

For the Central Sound, most of this falls between 2-7PM.

 

If this verifies it’s incredible that we’re getting a daytime snowfall with this setup. It also means the snow will stick around onto next day as well as it is expected to get below freezing. It won’t be a quick melt and tuesday morning could be messy.

Very grateful for the rain coming our way. We are still in severe drought conditions IIRC. I'm not sure where to check but we have been below normal in Dec to this point and we were in extreme drought into Nov.

EPS mean has shifted way south as well... this is going to be a perfect set up for the Seattle area.

Looks like NW Oregon will be getting the bulk of the rain— could be some isolated areas getting upwards of 6 inches. Happy that people may score some snow as well :)

Kind of sad I will be getting on an airplane 6 hours before the action is supposed to start. I’m sure this won’t be the last snow event of the season. Hope the next one is of the Arctic variety...this ones looking pretty slushy and marginal but still cool nonetheless. Hope to see lots of pics.

Haven’t gotten a chance to look at the temps map yet but I think Tim posted yesterday that for his area the Euro showed it will go from near 60 to 30 in matter in just a matter of hours. Gonna be real interesting to see how this plays out. Obviously this will mean snow and rain and the southern track will favor snow.

very dynamic situation. People above 500’ are pretty likely to see something. Still kinda questionable sea level-500’.

Not sure why but I have been having a ton of seizures lately for the last couple weeks. Even before all of this possible setup was happening and it sucks cuz it makes everything so hard to keep track of.

So I’ve been wondering about this and wonder if you playing cyberpunk has any impact on this? The graphics effects for this game seems to be a bit much and I think you said you’ve been playing.

It's been happening since the start of Dec before it came out. And I don't have an RTX card so the photosensitive stuff doesn't seem to be an issue. They did tons of tests on me for it and I actually have medial temporal lobe epilepsy which is directly affecting my language and memory to the point that it becomes utterly uncontrollable to not pour out sadness.

That’s actually good news as you’ll be able to continue to enjoy the game without any major impact. It sucks you have to continue to experience this. Take good care man.

12Z EPS... looks like Seattle is going to score a significant snow event without anything interesting in sight at the upper levels.   And during the week of Christmas as well!

The sun angle is so low right now that the snow will easily stick around with dry air and cold low temps regardless of the high temps.

It's exciting to follow, but I don't think my area will get much if anything. I'm at 300 feet elevation a block east of University Place, but technically Fircrest. Probably too far south and west.  But I will be excited for seeing others score...as long as I get something later, of course

Not even a mention of snow from the NWS.  Pretty hard to believe with the ECMWF being so insistent.  The scenario being shown is pretty believable.  With the 12z being even better than the 0z they might mention it tonight.

Tuesday night-Thursday looks like the kind of setup that might not even melt frost in the shade. Snow wouldn't have trouble sticking around if it were able to make it to Tuesday evening and freeze up.

It will freeze up and become hard.   If there was more rain ahead after the snow then I would agree... but this is different.

It will be pretty darn cold Tuesday night though.  That will freeze up what is left really good.  As I've said Dec 1974 is a decent analog to this and I remember it lasted for a while.

We ll see. If Sea Tac really has a low of 22 I agree, but you have to remember the ground is pretty warm. Tulsa just had 5” of snow melt in 2 days with temps never getting out of the 30s.

This is the reason why I was shock to see the totals as it is. Any initial snowfall will melt but from what I gather on some social media posts, current model guidance shows bursts of heavy wet snow and this will accumulate rather fast. And during daytime, the sun angle is a lot weaker so this will help.
