Operational GFS is still a bit of a cold outlier when compared to its ensemble suite, however, the ensemble is making a huge move in the direction of the operational... Ensembles might be playing catch up.

Hello 1983! Always wanted to experience the 80's!

Bozeman pulled a -20F/-32F on the 24th with that one. 6th coldest day on record. Seems plausible with this airmass and the lowest sun angles of the year once again.

DEN set their all-time record cold December max with a high of -8 during the 1983 event. Also stayed below 0 for 115 straight hours, which is the longest sub-zero period on record.

GEFS made significant changes towards the 12Z operational solution on the last 2 runs... just playing catch up.

Temps plummeted at daybreak from 37 to 31. My wet deck turned into a slippery deck!

Well I felt completely normal for about 4 days but we have a new fun sickness running through the house, was down with a low grade fever overnight, just enough to not sleep and have the shakes/chills. This season has been unbelievable for sickness, never seen anything like it. Perhaps it’s our immune system wanting to be at full strength for the massive extended cold and snow that’s coming!

I've been dealing with my 2nd bout of Covid over this past week.

It's coming.

I’ve been really glad this fall that we’re out of the small Petrie dish phase of parenthood. Although we did a charity function over the weekend with a bunch of kids and it seemed like 3/4 of them were hacking droplets in all directions. I feel like a ticking time bomb of virulence.

It’s been a rough one so far for the kids and anyone who has kids.  Never sure if they are sick, still sick or sick again. Attendance at school and daycare has been 25-50% some days

Yeah I have been pumping myself full, between everyone in the house I think we are single handily keeping the vitamin makers in business lol! Almost a 100% substitute teacher situation at our kids little private school today, I’m pretty sure all of this has been originating at their school.

Great ensemble improvements! :) Worried about flying out of Seattle on the 19th, though. I hope if we do get snow the time frame moves up 12-24 hours. That seems to be the theme this year so fingers crossed.

I don't want to get too excited, but this could be one of those rare events where I experience cold and snow out here first and a week later experience the same cold and snow out east.

I've had the unfortunate occasion to visit the ER in the last few weeks (as a visitor, not a patient) and it's just so awful seeing the halls full of kids. It's a REALLY bad illness year. I was a teacher for littles for over a decade and I've never seen anything like this.

Incidentally, the doggo just picked up a case of kennel cough thanks to some recent travel, so it seems like even without kids I can't win. 😑

It’s really bad. My 5 and 4 year olds both had fevers over 104, and stayed sick for quite a while. I’m almost certain it was 2 separate illnesses back to back. They are ripping through communities right now.

In the present term…. The showers over Puget sound right now popped up at the same time the 6z ran this morning and it hasn’t moved since.

Hoping to score some stationary showers once it gets cold again. Always fun when that happens.

I was quite surprised by moderate rain... didn't have my rain jacket. Oops!

The mood has really shifted on here! ❄️

A lot of people live and die by the model riding in the winter, including myself.

My interest in weather mostly is around extremes so going from "even the GFS thinks cold rain" to "euro and it's ensembles are on board for Cold and potentially snowy" is a pretty exciting change of events.  Even the GFS is trending back, albeit in a traditional GFS ways showing Antarctica temps in eastern WA.

Yeah it’s been back to back to back illnesses at the house. Luckily the kids have been bouncing back rapidly each time…Me…Not so much. My wife also gets over it fairly quickly. It all started in November 5th with a scratchy throat…Been insane ever since. At least this time I was healthy for a few days, ended up getting a bunch of stuff done around the house and property which was nice. I really hope this one is much shorter in duration, need to be healthy for the big blast coming!

There are definitely some hints in the models of the ridge moving back overhead after the arctic trough moves away. That would make for a pretty incredible cold stretch if it happens.  Been awhile since we’ve seen anything like that.

That would be amazing! Would be nice to have snow on the ground for Christmas!
