December Weather In the PNW

BLI snowman

Recommended Posts

I think most of us will agree that Christmas was amazing, however I think all of us can also agree that we all want “the big one” 1950 style!

I'd settle for a Jan, 1969. Obviously, Eugene killed it. I think the rest of the PNW also did well, but I haven't looked too deeply into that.

Bryant...looks like the 18z NAM wants to give you a little snow on the weekend. That low keeps coming in a notch to the south on each run.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Yeah that's Eugene/Springfield's legendary one. Even Albany, Corvallis, and Monmouth had huge totals with that one. I imagine the low must have come inland around the Oregon/Cali border with Arctic air in place.

A lot sunnier up here, isn't it!!?!

Well, I will still show legitimate excitement for events, disappointment when they don’t work out, and will give analysis of possible scenarios before they happen. So I’m still a little ways from fully shedding my mortal coil.

Nobody from this forum (except for Timmy supercell) would have thought that Jan 1950 could have been better. I would say most of us were very happy when all was said and done in late Dec 2008.

I think January 1953 would beat January 1950 hands down in his book.

I think the low sat stationary around the Coos Bay area for 3 days.

Yup, on the bright side, no matter what happens it will always be possible to make ourselves unhappy thinking it could have been better!

Last year was amazing out here. I mean it was a top 10 winter for the last century so I’ll never complain if I get anything like that again.

This year in comparison is absolute crap. Still plenty of time to change that, especially at 3500’, but I’m just hoping for something near average. I obviously didn’t expect a repeat of last winter.

34 here today... the snow is not as pretty now.

It was snowing this afternoon while skiing but it was totally dry at our house today.

I see it was cold enough for snow from BLI northward... traffic cams look snowy up there but just wet in Bellingham proper.

I can handle the Candice Cameron ones for primal, adolescent flashback reasons, but the the Winnie Cooper ones take it way too far. I'm pretty sure they have something to do with the recurring +PNA.

Haven’t been lacking in the cold department. As my sig shows we’ve had 53 lows at or below freezing, 3 single digit lows and 6 highs in the 20s. I’m not one that needs snow any time it’s cold, just hoping for near average snowfall.

Agreed. My comment was more a nod the wildly varying perceptions on last winter’s level of awesomeness.

Sadly, many are unable to appreciate the most sustained regional wintertime cold pattern we have seen in a few decades because it didn’t deliver enough snow to their backyards.

So a good portion of folks up in WA that got snow, had it been 6 or so years between good snow events for you guys? What's the longest drought? Longest in the Central WV since I moved here in 1989 was just 2 years 14-15 and 15-16 where we never came close.

How much snow did you get in Feb, 2014? My friend's dad, near Rickreall, had a max depth of an incredible 22 inches.

January 2012 was the last big event...still waiting for one of those again.

Everyone did great with that.  Places north of Eugene were colder, but they probably had the biggest single day snowfall.  In my area there was snow on the ground every day of the month.

We did great in Feb, 2014. It was the 2 winters after that where there was nothing even close here. One of only 2 times that's happened here since 1989. Other time was 01-02 and 02-03.

Model trends look great today.  Yesterday's GEM was the first one to show major blocking in the sweet spot and then the 12z GFS and ECMWF both looked great.  Interestingly every run of the EPS control has been good for the past 3 days as we get into the second week of January.

I liked last winter over all.  The first winter Lake Meridian froze over since I've lived here.  That's a big lake too.

If we get a blast in January the lakes will be primed to freeze easily since it's already been cold.

I remember having a little thing for her back then but her voice drives me nuts now.

Funny thing is, I vividly remember dividing my attention between watching The Wonder Years and looking out the window to see if it was snowing during the February 1989 blast. Analog???
