February Weather in the Pacific Northwest

Nice to see this event start to put up some impressive numbers at the surface. The duration of upper level cold is getting pretty crazy. I think we have been on either side of -10c at 850mb since early Monday morning.

The -10.5c over SLE on Monday afternoon was really impressive (and we're right back down to -9.5c on the 00z sounding today). I'm pretty sure that was the latest -10c sounding @ 850 since at least the early 1970s. I can access upper air data back to 1973 and I can't find another occurrence of -10c as late as 2/19. Neither Feb 2011 nor March 1989 got that cold at 850hpa over SLE, although 2011 was close at -9.5c and obviously later in the calendar. Feb 1990 & 1993 were both colder but also a few days earlier in the month. Events like March 2002 & 2009 bottomed out at around -9c. March 1, 1976 was -9.3c. Might have to go back to 1971, or maybe even any one of 1951/1955/1957/1960/1962.

Stronger echoes are definitely starting to spread East and fill in from Everett up to about Mt. Vernon.

Hopefully they hold together and start sliding South soon to help fill in the Central Sound.

What is the coldest 850 Seattle has had that we have data for?

This is what gives me confidence. Current radar and what the 18z NAM models said we would see right now. It didn't see the intense moisture developing right now off the SW WA coast.

NW flow, it ain't going to happen for the central sound

Low is diving SE, no way the associated moisture wraps around that far north.

He lives in Portland.

All eyes for us Central Sounders should be on the moisture currently blossoming in the North Sound.

Going to verify that 500' snow level in person?

These things fascinate me

29 degrees at sunset as powdery moderate snow is falling and knowing that it’s not going to warm up and melt immediately is just the best!!

What is the coldest 850 Seattle has had that we have data for?

We ended up at -20 or a bit lower in December 1968.  I'm betting late January 1893 probably dropped to about -25 based on how cold it got.

That moisture is really blasting down the Sound now.  I'm interested to see when it meets up with the moisture just south of Seattle.

That little meso low is not the thing to watch. The trough of lower pressure is elongated around vancuver island and will drop south on the coast and increase the flow of precipitation from the sw.

Honestly I didn’t think that I would see anything more than a flurry... already about a half inch of new with moderate snow. A February to remember for sure!
