OK I guess they were not really Christians. A few were. Most of them were somewhere in between Deists and Christians. They thought the Bible provided a good moral code and good principles for how to govern.
They did seem to believe people had a sinful nature and that the power of government must be limited to prevent it from becoming tyrannical. However they also did not believe in anarchy and said that limited government was only possible with a moral and religious people. They created a constitutional republic and warned about the dangers of a direct democracy.
The "all men are created equal" could be derived from Genesis 1:27. It's sad we could not live up to those ideals throughout our ugly history.
America though was in many ways like a sanctuary nation (like sanctuary cities today) for people around the world fleeing from religious persecution and tyrannical governments in other countries.
