July 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

93-94 was a rather bush league winter too so hopefully not an analog but we are definitely not due here.

 

Yeah 93-94 was an awful winter. No rain until December, January was a torch, and most arctic air events had no precipitation. Except for the late February one (backloaded because why wouldn't it be) that dumped 2 slushy inches at PDX which immediately melted with the 1.9" of rain that fell that day.

 

92-93 was great though.

92-93 was great though.

FWIW, 1993/94 was an infuriating winter for my area too. Tons of extreme cold but the storm track was complete crap and kept warm-sectoring us into sleet/ZR..it was literally pouring rain at 15*F in one of those storms. Thank goodness I was too young to remember that.

 

But I’d love a repeat of 1992/93..epic triple-phaser superstorm dumping 16” of snow in 7hrs followed by sideways sleet and gusts to 72mph. My family still has old home videos of that monster.

Yeah... your area is pretty much the same under ridging and troughing. Basically 70s and sun.

 

Here the difference is huge.

I wonder how often a true "year without a summer" like 1954 actually happens. Once every 100 years maybe?

Gfs looks even wetter than the previous run. Vancouver island in the bullseye and good amount of rain in western WA all the way down to the Portland area over the next 10 days. No heat in sight.

As a kid I remember a lot of gray summer days where it burned off by 2pm.

Just got back from camping at Tumalo State Park the past few days. First time visiting there and they have a nice campground. Would recommend it to anyone. The weather was gorgeous, sunny skies with highs in the 80s each day.

Summers were considerably cooler and shorter once you get past 100 years ago. Not even remotely close. It was quite rare for Portland to even hit 95+.

For an example of what we were capable of, on July 14, 1856 the high at Fort Vancouver was 54 and low was 51 with 0.71" of rain.

Still 66 as of 5:15pm and no sunshine. Still looks like some showers moving eastward off the Olympic peninsula into areas north of Seattle.

Sounds like that could have been a deformation zone event. I’ve already talked about the July 18, 1987 deformation zone which caused many places from central OR to far north CA to have their coldest summer day on record.

High temp of 66 for the day currently 65. Some showers still up north of Seattle along the sound. Completely cloudy it looked like it was going to clear up around 6 but it clouded over again.

Rained most of the afternoon but only about 0.06" to show for it. Nice, to see plenty of opportunities for more to come.
