July 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I was so close to five I could taste it. I remember it snowing that day.

We got a dusting a few days later...I remember my dad being pissed about that dusting accumulating on his black 1978 mint Chevy truck that he would wash twice a week and wax every month! He would play the ELO 8-track in it as he would clean the truck!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

I think I might have found it. Tough to say for sure, but if this is indeed it, then I retract my statement and would call it a tornado as well.

Definitely looks at least somewhat outflow dependent, but it lasted awhile and that is close to the storm’s updraft corridor.

Note the first 7-8 frames.

Oh I must have missed that when he posted it earlier. Pretty crazy week of weather for Portland. We had a funnel cloud pass over Tacoma last fall and it actually came pretty close to the ground when it went to the NE of here over the Kent area in a video I saw later that day. Was a tornado less than 20 miles from here just 6 months ago an F2 in port orchard.

Yeah, it's been a fun week of weather down here. I wish this type of weather happened more often in the PNW.

Hey, you got the best of both worlds. A nice thunderstorm with no heat or humidity.

That combo never happens here in the summer, and it’s rare almost everywhere in the US except maybe that CO/WY/MT corridor?

hasn’t been much weather excitement since the snow in early March west of the cascades. This last week has been interesting a lot of places in western WA and OR saw t-storms 6/26-6/27 and Portland got a good one today. We had our first t-storm of 2019 in Tacoma on 6/27 and numerous places saw t-storms on 6/26 as well. Probably the most active weather that’s gone on in about 4 months.

Finally heard some thunder for the first time in forever a few days ago and now had a cloudy and cool day. Enjoying the summer so far, so much better than the Apt-Sept blast furnace of the past 6 yrs.

No t-storms here so far this summer.

I haven’t seen lightning in person since August of 2006. Only heard thunder. We did have a t-storm roll through here a few days ago but it was pretty sporadic at best with lightning and we could only hear thunder from downtown Springfield.

That seems unlucky. I’m certain you guys see far more tstorm days per year on average.

That's a little hard to swallow, weren't there some nocturnal t'storms in your area in 2015-2016?

And not sure how long you lived there but I'm pretty sure a couple severe cells plowed right through Eugene/Springfield on June 4 2009 as the start of that big complex.

Maybe we will get another good t-storm setup one of these days this summer or fall west of the cascades and the south BC area will cash in.

Nah, you're talking like 1-3 more a year down there probably.

Pretty strange then to not see lightning at all for 13 years.

I have seen plenty of lightning here just in the last 7 days.

I have seen a decent amount of lightning the last few years and I live in Eugene. I do make a good effort to go outside and try to view it. We've had at least 3 days of tstorms this year, including two very nice ones. If you can hear thunder, there is lightning to be seen.

Up North here pretty much every year we see a t-storm with some lightning atleast once or twice. There’s been a couple years where we’ve seen none and a couple years where we’ve had a handful of them.

Rain band dropping out southward of BC this morning looks unusual on radar. Currently looks like it stretches from Bellingham to south Vancouver island across to the NW Olympic peninsula.

Today would be a good candidate for a sub-70 high at PDX. Of course starting out with a low of 60 is not helpful...

Upper trough as it sags south due to the ULL to our south this am, flow turns NNE later

This feels a bit like early July 2010. Even though back then I lived in Hillsboro I'm sure both here and there are having a particularly cool entrance to July this year.

Minor difference is that in 2010 we almost had no t'storms until the Fall that year.

that’d be nice to have a repeat of summer 2010 around here. Overall it’s been a slow start to summer compared to the last 5 years.

They will probably just barely hit 70, but yeah its the best shot they've had in July for awhile. They haven't seen a sub-70 high in July since 2014 which is pretty astounding.

Then again I haven’t personally seen lightning in 38 years so stranger things have happened.
