September 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Being wet makes you feel colder... its just a reality.

Can't say I notice it. 50ºF just isn't cold to me no matter what - and 50+ temps are a fairly frequent occurrence even in the dead of winter. Of course, there are exceptions like February of 2019, but for the most part it's really mild here.

You're from San Diego though, so maybe you feel differently. People in tropical climates feel cold at 70ºF.

I am from Minnesota.

And I will say 50 and rain does feel pretty nice after a long period of cold east winds. But normally its annoyingly raw.

Ah, my apologies. You just lived in SD for some time, right? I've heard talk of both San Diego and Minnesota from you, so I couldn't really tell.

Speaking of 50ºF, Hillsboro Airport still hasn't broken that number. Sitting at 49 for a while now. Lowest September max on record incoming for HIO? We'll see.

Insanity.

Double edged sword is that all of the tasty cloud cover this afternoon could keep lows milder than expected if it hangs around. Can’t win em all!

Yes... born and raised in MN and lived in MN longer than anywhere else. At least for a few more years.

Will be tough to get to 40 tonight at PDX.

They haven't been below 44 in the month since 2005 though, for some perspective. This morning's low temp tied the monthly low for the decade there and that came with precip falling.

The stubborn cloudcover is pretty expected. A pretty typical case of the models overestimating the low level dry air advection with an incoming cold airmass. We see it in the winter a lot.

It seemed like today has been forecast to be pretty cloudy for awhile. But yeah with all the moisture around it may be tough to fully clear/dry out the low and mid levels. I do like the fact that a gorge wind is blowing and DPs have fallen into the mid-upper 30s.

Looks like PDX will pull off a 52 degree high today. Ties a monthly record.

First record low monthly max at that station since February 1989.

If the high of 50 at HIO holds, that’s a new all time record.

Wenatchee and Yakima have not only broken, but absolutely shattered their old September records. The records of 49 and 50 respectively were broken with a 43°F high at both locations.

That’s unreal. Did you get much at your place?

Only 4" here but a 30F/24F day which is by far the earliest sub-freezing high I've seen.

This feels like middle of November, not the end of September.

Also had some wet snow last night, my earliest I have witnessed the whole time I've lived east of the cascades.

To be fair, western PNWers aren’t much better. People here seem to think anything under 55°F is cold.

When I first moved to the PNW (from the Rockies), I was duly amused that anyone could somehow think the PLUS twenties were bitter cold. (That's just early fall stuff!) Fast forward five years and I felt it was outright wintry when the temperature fell into the 20's. One does get soft living in this climate.

I don't buy the "dry cold vs wet cold" for one second. There is no conceivable way to me that 50 can feel colder than 25.

Winters here are actually so mild, especially for being at 45.5ºN latitude. Just a single jacket (not even a heavy one) is enough to be adequately dressed for the weather most days. Can't say that about skiing in a dry 25ºF.

I think people tend to exaggerate about how mild it is.  A normal low temp in the winter is around freezing where I live.  As for max temps our average is about the same as Denver and many other cities that are considered cold.

Sun is running a stretch of 26 consecutive spotless days.

Longest streak so far this minimum is 33 consecutive days. Not much disturbance on the solar surface either (at the moment), so maybe we can set a new record.

As of noon Great Falls had 18.8" storm total and 9" on the ground. Looks like the snow ended around 6p local time there, so they may have gotten 20".

Once it goes below freezing it's all the same as far as water is concerned.  I hate getting into pissing contests about my winter is colder than your winter.  I think this one will be special for this area and could care less if somebody else drops to -25.

We have a ways to go down here. 48 with light rain currently. But only made it up to 50 here today. Earliest 50 degree high I’ve personally seen in this area by 3-4 weeks if not longer.

That area of clearing moving south through Washington into Lewis County looks promising.

If this were any time after Thanksgiving, Corvallis would be getting slammed with snow right now. Moderate rain 49 and NE wind at 14mph.
