Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

We are going to finish the month with a 46.6F avg, missing 1953 by 0.3F. Passing 1934 for January futility is incredibly depressing.  And even more alarming is the fact that the region is due for a complete dud where the mtns don't get anything either.  Going to be a long stretch without interesting weather in the Willamette Valley.

Baby step improvements

That should be enough for the Snoqualmie Valley School District to keep schools closed until Wednesday. Someone might have to drive on snow on the road and that is not acceptable... ever.

Safety first!

It was never supposed to be windy there . . .

Somewhere else is always going to be getting a storm. You're always going be disappointed if you focus too much on that.

I'll sing for the place that my heart has called home where the salty sea air meets the cold mountain snow where I'm free to be healthy and happy and strong live long in Oregon, long live the Oregon Spirit, long live the Oregon Way, to Care for each one every daughter and son, live long in Oregon.

Well, seems like this place is the only place that doesn’t get storms...but I digress. I’m just hoping things get a little blustery tonight.

Plus— we weren’t all lucky enough to get 3+ feet of snow the last two winters. On the bright side, I did apply to Gannon University in Erie, PA, so my streak may soon be ended!

SEA is at 9.16 inches for the month now... good for a spot in the top 5 wettest Januaries list.

OLM is at 15.45 inches... which is now the 3rd wettest January just behind 2006 in second place.

HQM is at 19.50 inches... 2nd wettest January in history.

And UIL was at 29.11 inches for the month through 4 p.m. which blows away the previous record for the wettest January from 2006 (24.02).

This very wet January also followed a significantly wet December across western WA... its been a pretty normal winter.

Even with the finally actually getting rain this month we still had plenty of sunny moments including a beautiful sunrise yesterday.

Well the south sound did get slammed pretty hard by 2 windstorms last winter. There’s just been nothing big this year. Last year had big snowstorms and windstorms this year not so much down this way.

Savannah GA! Jesus it was rough last year in May.

You visit SE GA often? It’s one of our favorite spots on the planet despite the steam bath. We visit St. Simons every year in August, which is the most humid time of year lol.

Definitely the worst swamp weather I’ve ever experienced is down there. Worse than here, worse than New Orleans, worse than Miami, worse than Galveston. Those waters are nuclear hot thanks to the sea breeze/BH downwelling on that extended continental shelf. They can easily surpass 90*F.

Looks like the rain is trying to come back down SE. Won’t be long before the rain is here again...should bump my 10.21” of monthly rain a bit higher.

No, only once. I am in the Air National Guard out of Warrenton OR and had a TDY there last year.

What’s wrong with Colorado? Denver is probably my #1 or #2 ideal “move to” climates as of now.

Either that or a lake effect climate like Muskegon or Erie that also gets severe thunderstorm action.

I love Colorado too, but the places that get a lot of snow are extraordinary expensive. Denver doesn't get that much, relatively speaking, and the snow often melts quickly. I like living in a place where the snow stays on the ground for 3 months and you can cross country ski and snowshoe without leaving town.
