March 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I doubt golf courses will close, easy to practice safe distance out there.

Hope you are right. That might be a good activity for me and my sons next weekend when everything else is closed.

Good thing about being a club member at the course by our house is there is no need to interact with anyone, just show up and tee off.

Unless there is mandate that all non-essential businesses close. I guess you could still golf though... no one would care.

Ya, who knows for sure, it is a country club so hopefully they are not forced in to shutting down, ie.. groundskeeping etc..

Nice afternoon here though, 41 and sunny.

40/32 here today with just shy of 2" of snow all told. I wouldn't have guessed how close our obs would be today!

Pretty interesting. But it was sunny for 2-3 hours here today, and we have no offshore flow.

You are 1,300 ft higher than me and not in the middle of the concrete jungle either, though

Yes, I would say your temp today is much more impressive than here. But the lower level CAA up there is much more impressive than the airmass aloft. The upper level airmass two Saturday's ago was actually slightly colder.

It is a fairly decent airmass aloft though or else it would have just been rain here since until about 30 minutes ago we had south winds.

Based on some quick research, it appears if today's high of 42 holds at PDX, yesterday's MAX of 42 and today's will stand as their coldest back to back highs this late in the season on record. From what I can tell anything below 45 today would have done it, actually.

Today also tied for their third latest measurable snowfall on record (it also snowed on this date in 1955).

Looks like the persistent offshore ridge / coolish dry regime that has been present since early February may finally be going away and SW flow precip returning as the stratosphere enters the final warming. Long range GFS has been hinting it at pretty strongly but it’s not quite within Euro range yet.

38/34 and 40/35 here the past 2 days...some of the coldest weather of the winter right at the end. Yesterday’s 38/34 was the latest sub 40 day in Tacoma in my lifetime.

Looks like the only place that got skunked this whole winter was Eugene in the PNW. Pretty much everyone saw some snow at some point this winter.

Up to 21" on the winter now. Beating any winter in the 2012-2013 through 2015-16 stretch. Still would need another big event to beat 2017-18.

Oh well...got nailed on 2-25-19. Fortunately down here we will be able to cherish that for a while since we are far more dependent on upper-level conditions.

The main thing that’s been bizarre is the lack of Dec-Jan goodies here for a while now. Not talking about the whole PNW, just the south valley. We haven’t had a sub-freezing high temp since Jan 14, 2017.

I have seen so much snow falling the last 12-24 hours that when I close my eyes I see falling snowflakes. Coronavirus?

That happened to be after the blizzard in 2016.

Sleep deprivation (+ coronavirus).

January 2017 was not bad. You guys missed out on the big 12-14-16 snowstorm though.

I probably got about three hours sleep last night. I knew that was our big event for the season so I tried to enjoy every minute of heavy snow that I could. Almost impossible for me to sleep through that stuff, even if I have obligations the next day. I will just catch up on a different night.

Me and some buddies took a hike up to about 820' on the Samish Crest Trail a little while ago. It really felt like January up there, my hands and face were completely frozen with the wind. Gorgeous sunset though. It was hard not to think about the potential for accumulation at that elevation with the temperatures we had today if there had been more precipitation available.

Got up to 46F. Seasonably cool day.  Hasn't felt all that interesting though.  If someone lived here and didn't pay a ton of attention to the weather, they would have never known that the entire rest of the PNW had a more interesting winter than we did.

Though it is odd that we had over 50 days with sub-freezing temps and only one sub-40F high, all the way back on November 30.  That feels like it doesn't happen very often.

Got up to 46F. Seasonably cool day. Hasn't felt all that interesting though. If someone lived here and didn't pay a ton of attention to the weather, they would have never known that the entire rest of the PNW had a more interesting winter than we did.

Good thing no one lives there.

My preferences can beat up your preferences’ dad.

I probably got about three hours sleep last night. I knew that was our big event for the season so I tried to enjoy every minute of heavy snow that I could. Almost impossible for me to sleep through that stuff, even if I have obligations the next day. I will just catch up on a different night.

You made the right call.
