We are really paying for that abysmal +ENSO torching we endured for the first half of the winter. Boundary layer conditions are so hostilely poleward that even when the blocking gets sensational, the best Arctic air is still yet to be advected into the states. Much if not all of the lowered heights within the country are due to bombing low pressure systems and maritime cold air being advected into the subtropics.

If the 500mb pattern gets good the cold will come.  It always does.

The PNW is a meteorological fiasco. Heights don't quite get down to those Jan 1950-type numbers. But make no mistake, that is a serious low level airmass. So much sharp transition over such a large area; this would be the mountain wave event of a century for many.
