Winter wonderland here eyeballing about 6” here.  ; Nice little surprise !     31 degrees now.  Snow is pasted on our trees,  really cool to see. Rain might stay away from us.   Almost skied down our hill with shoes.  This stuff is exactly like the snow I remember growing up in the PNW.

Meanwhile, going on 2 years since I've even had a 5" storm here.  Pretty crazy for living around I-80 and not in a place that's prone to dryness.

I had record depth in Feb 2021 and also had deep snowcover in Feb 2022, so definitely been paying for that.

Been all snow for about 5 hours here- maybe only 2.5 inches so far. But it’s really heavy and power is going in and off - outages starting to ramp up all over. 
 

DTX still maintaining a switch over to rain for the thumb but has t happened yet.

 

Luckily I filled up 2 of my gas cans for the generator. Hopefully won’t need em!

 

EDIT: so I was wrong. Went out and measured and we’re at 4 inches

Haven't had a chance to even look at this storm, but read very few posts on here, but still not aware of what is going on, but I do know that this is a big storm.

4" has fallen in Detroit and still snowing.

Very glad to see you guys in SEMI getting in on the action - finally. Left work at 5:40 and it was just getting started with under an inch. This was a much drier snow with tiny flakes than on Tuesday. Drove south and it just got heavier and heavier. Was scraping bottom of my car on the exit ramp. Public roads freshly plowed in town here, but I live on a short private street and it was not touched, not even someone else's vehicle tracks. Snow was too deep to go up the slight incline of my driveway so I was stuck sideways in our street. Good thing I picked up that $12 shovel the other day. It worked perfectly to dig my way into the garage, lol. Not sure what time it started down here, but if at 5 pm then we've gotten pounded with 7-8" in the last 4 hours. I'm officially snowed-in until the snow removal contractor can get around to plowing our street. We are down at lake level and there is quite a hill to get up and out. Already told my director not to expect me in the morning.

Isentropically driven light snow is currently spreading across
parts of northern Michigan this afternoon. Increasingly strong
warm advection and frontogenetic forcing late this
afternoon/evening are expected to aid in bringing a robust swath
of snow into southeastern portions of the forecast area by
early-mid evening. Very high snowfall rates (likely
convectively aided with potential embedded thunder), especially
east of Interstate 75, are expected within this heavy snow with
HREF means of 2.5-3"/hr as that band of snow works northward
through the evening. Localized 4"/hr snowfall rates not out of
the question.

Thanks amigo. The Tuesday storm was just starting when I left for work so it was ok via good tires, lol. Wed morning was about 3" deep and speed got me up. I'd say the limit for my car is likely in the 4-5" range. It has been snowy and wintry since we got here at NYE. I really like my commutes with like 3 other cars on the x-way. Dicey driving tho for sure.

That is a REAL taste of heavy snow accumulation. Last time I saw snow that heavy was back in NYC (Blizzard of 96 and also Blizzard 2006). Insane rates....hardly able to see a person crossing the street.

@ClintonHope you are scoring buddy w some of that white gold. Now, w that bitter cold air, chances looking very good for all snow and no mixing, for a change.

Looks like the GFS did a great job for SEMI, unlike the Euro. Mostly snow throughout the whole duration here.

Congrats on the snow.  Nada for me on this one, I did okay on the storm before.  Light snow here tomorrow, maybe an inch.  The GFS has been good lately, the Euro is on the struggle bus.

There has been a lull in the snowfall overnight in much of SW Michigan. Overnight there has been around 0.2” of new snowfall.  Here in MBY at 6AM  there is light snow falling and the temperature is 31. The temperature has hung around 32 for many hours now and the snow that has fallen is very wet and sloppy.

For January 12^th the official H/L at Grand Rapids was 34/28. There was 0.71” of precipitation and a reported 7” of snowfall. There was 3” of snow on the ground yesterday at 7AM the highest wind gust was reported at 38MPH our of the E. For today the average H/L is 31/19 the record high of 58 was set in 1932 and the record low of -5 was set in 2015. The most snowfall of 10.5” fell in 1979 the most on the ground was 20” in 1918. Last year the H/L was 35/24. The official snowfall at Grand Rapids was 7” yesterday here in MBY I had 4.2” of very wet snowfall and there is now a total of 7” on the ground here in my yard. Some other snowfall totals from yesterday are 3.9" at Lansing, 4.5" at Muskegon. 4.6" at Detroit,

The "dome" has been demolished...it was fascinating watching the radar continue to redevelop bands of mod/heavy SN in the extremely cold airmass for hours on end.  Unlike those in N IL/N IN/S MI that had to deal with that irritating "warm nose" caused by the pesky double barrel low, you guys out farther west enjoyed a tremendous Winter Storm.  So happy for you all in E NE that appear to have snapped the streak of bad luck with systems.  @gabel23 @Bryan1117 @The Snowman

Sadly, this one will hurt for a lot of peeps in Chitown and southern burbs...however, my brother up north in Volo, IL got 8" and just to his west in Algonquin I saw a report of 11" and they never saw a switchover.  ORD officially ended up with 4.7" so far but could tack on some more today. 

@FV-Mike, did you do good?  Hopefully the wave thats forecast to develop this evening provides and nice fresh coating on top of the frozen glacier.

All in all, the Mets missed this one for W MI....We only received 5 inches in Hudsonville, when 10-12 was forecasted. We will see if the West wind snow belt sets up tonight.....

Dubuque total ended up being 9.2,” so I guess the forecast wasn’t really too far off at all in the end. Looks like it snowed a decent amount after I fell asleep very early last night.

I took this screenshot about 2hours ago to show that the storm still was in the consolidation phase and never reached the 970's like most, if not, all models were suggesting in Lower MI.

Yep did alright. Finished with 7 . West and north burbs did well

Yep. Dbl-barrelled Low "fooled" the pro's. Been a long time since I've seen one, and iirc they can happen with an EC Low and an OHV Low which put SEMI in the same favorable position that SEIA and SWI enjoyed with this storm. For up here, at least it was still a decent storm, just not the "once in 30 yrs historic event" touted by APX. Seems like it is always something working against the Big Dog outcome for SMI. Having said all that, back-to-back 8-10" storms in a "strong Nino" is impressive in it's own way. Difficult to eye-ball depth from a 2nd story window and drifting off the lake ice due to the strong N winds again adding to the mix but my guestimate of a 9-10" total here seems about right. You can clearly see there was a swath of 8-15" right along the glacial ridge that runs SW to NE right through this region.

It has been a while since we had 13- 14 inches on the ground. I know the closer you get to the lake the less but in an El nino year this has been a good week
