I should of thought ahead and got out my snow making tool, would of worked good at 12 degrees.  It hooks up to a pressure washer and has 4 nozzles. The bigger the pressure washer the better

Ours is closer to 80k btu but we can heat 2400 ft2 with it if we wanted. Takes a bit to heat the second floor though.  Wood stoves get a bad reputation because people don’t use them properly or burn wet wood.  If ours is going good and the wood is dry there is zero smoke coming out of the chimney.  A lot of people burn wet wood or turn the air down before they get to temperature and they end up smoking out the neighbors.

I am very picky on burning wood.

Mine is seasoned 2 years and I only burn fir and Madrona.

Look how clean my window is on the stove, I haven't cleaned it in a year. 

When the power is out we cook on it and it works great.

Saw a little ice in the Puyallup river as it flowed into the sound in Tacoma. I also saw a little ice floating on the surface by the boats in the harbor. Can’t remember ever seeing that in the Tacoma waterfront.

The house just sold last year and I got these pics off of Redfin…Absolute time capsule as it was exactly the same inside minus minor kitchen updates since 1991 when my parents sold it during their divorce. Anyway, Nothing like wood burning heat.

The cool thing is the PNW's varied terrain means a stable source of moisture is the main limiting factor.

We essentially have Arctic air trapped in the intermountain west against its will, ready to be tapped into with the slightest offshore gradient. All that flat terrain east of the Rockies is a double-edged sword. Yeah you can get deep Arctic air, but it blows east just as fast. Hard to trap air (except in the lee of the Appalachians south of Philly)

That means Seattle's high end snow potential is ironically leagues higher than NYC or Boston or the like. Just need the perfect pattern.

Perhaps a November 1996 repeat! A low was supposed to track just like the one this week is looking to track, and was supposed to only be a Whatcom special after a very brief rain/snow mix…Well it came in south of Olympia and blasted everything north of it. Rich Marriott was stunned but each weather segment of the morning news that morning he kept saying that the snow that was falling would turn to rain any moment…That moment never came and the puget sound had a wide spread snow event. Ended up with 6” or so at my place. I still have a VHS tape of King 5 news that morning and Rich being in disbelief!

The plus side of staying socked in the clouds. The downside is we cap potential cooling tonight. But if we can maximize it tomorrow night we could get an 11:59pm low.

Some times someone else gets the fire going and I’ll come home and the glass is all dirty.  I hate not being able to see the fire so I crank the air up and it’ll burn the glass clean in awhile.

If this trough had went another 100 miles west it would of carved out just enough to send one low pressure wave after another right over us. It would of been absurdity and the coldest onshore flow in decades.

I’m stalled out on my remodel but the room is ready. I just need to stay home long enough to make it happen.  I need to find my plans I drew up but this is the general idea.  Sort of and inclosed wood stove burning area.  Then I want to run and oversized rustic timber above it.  The wood stove would be bigger then the one in the photo.  Would love to snag my parents Franklin stove as that thing kept the house hot and we cooked on it as well during the Portland ice storms (power outages).   Fun dreaming up ideas like this

Seeing temps in the 40s south of Bend now, while north of Redmond temps hang in the single digits. Stuck around 20 here while Horse Creek at 3500’ to our east is into the upper 30s. Live look.

I remember that one. Still to this day the fastest and hardest I have seen it snow and accumulate was Nov 1985. I was in 7th grade and when we got to school at around 745 there was 2 inches that Harry wapler said would turn to rain and by noon there was over 1 foot! I'd love to see sat pics from that set up.

I get why my fellow Puget Sounders are weenie-ing out, and I would have loved a big ticket snow storm as much as anyone else, but I can’t be too disappointed with this. I got to experience a sub-20 high with gap winds making the wind chill below zero during the day yesterday. Also today should be my third straight sub freezing high and we got a chance at four tomorrow. We got almost a 1/2” from the arctic front which at least made the ground white for a little bit. And tons of frozen waterfalls, etc. that we don’t see during a pedestrian cold snap with sloppy wet snow. All in all a memorable event here.

Or the block would of pinched off and only northern areas would of gotten snow with cold hugging the border. That’s happened a lot in recent years. It was nice to see the low level cold make a full penetration this time IMO.

 We have seen that a lot in recent years.  It’s such a fine line once the trough digs out over the ocean.  The arctic trough gets hung up In Northern Washington as low pressure develops offshore.  It was nice to see a real airmass swing through.

Does that mean its still coming? Is Meatyorologist on record for saying that we will slammed with snows not seen since the Nootka Crisis?

My mom has gotten so set in her ways.   My sister lives in San Diego and since my dad died we have been telling her she needs get down there.   She spent the last 2 years just going to the nursing home every day and never went more than 5 miles from home because she was afraid something would happen when she was gone.  Her excuse for not going down to San Diego for a couple weeks during the winter months?   She said she needs to be home to get the mail every day.   No amount of rationalization will get her to change her mind.

Its got to be a control thing. We have my wife's grandmother living with us. She has her faculties, just circulotory issues after a heart valve replacement a couple years ago. She is a go-go grandma in her mid 80s, and yet things like managing medication or getting rid of a throw rug designed to break hips is just beyond her grasp. So now we have grandma living with us in what she thinks is just a snowbird visit from her place in Sequim.

Cheers to my MiL who thinks that helping is "coming by once a week to maybe bring lunch" but then berates my wife about how all the doctors are not helping.
