March 2024 Weather in the PNW

The winter of 1879-80 was an equally ridgy period for the southeast US. Then you have its inverse in 1861-62 out here. The more and more I read about it, the more and more it seems that the 19th century was a time period of midlatitude extremes overall. Or perhaps I am simply acknowledging the extremes you'd expect to see out of an entire century of weather across a whole continent.

Definitely more temperature variability out here in the summers back in the 19th century.

Lows in the 40s/50s weren’t all that rare out here in July, now it’s a struggle to drop below 70°F at night. Diurnal swings were much larger too, even had some days with highs ~ 100°F and lows in the upper 50s! Unfathomable anything like that could occur today..air-masses must have been significantly drier back then.

There were still nasty stretches with lows in the mid/upper 70s and highs in the 90s like today, but it wasn’t a permanent feature like it is in modern summers. Would last a week then abate for a week, etc.

WxBell has added the ECMWF AIFS. Runs 4X/day and goes out to 360hrs. Interested to see how it performs compared to the operational ECMWF HRES and EPS.

Are you allergic?

I don't do anything in particular to avoid getting stung, and it's been over 20 years since my last sting (honeybee, so not bad at all, wasp stings are much more painful).

Not allergic fortunately. I mean, I still do basic things during that window of time, just maybe not weed eating or jogging between those handful of hours in the warmer seasons.

The EPS seems more inclined to retrograde the ridge a bit after day 10.  More into what I like to call the cold night spot.

I understand the analysis but I have never heard you use that term before... are you cheating on us with another weather forum? 😀

No... talking about @ShawniganLake seeing snow right now with the Seattle area heading to the mid 50s.   That is a decent gradient.

40s and sunny with dry air won't do much damage to the snowpack in the Cascades.

Next weekend sure is looking fantastic. Looks like a round of golf is in order. Got one in two weekends ago. It was incredible. (My golf game wasn’t). Baseball and golf season is here!

The shitter is the fact I suspect most public golf courses and youth baseball programs will be shutting down by next weekend due to the dangerous heat conditions and widespread smoke. We just can’t find that happy medium.☹️

I get that creating strawmen is a big part of what you do for a living, but no one is paying you here. Well maybe someone is.

Agreed. The mountain melt off is being vastly overplayed IMO.  Especially since they'll get like two feet this weekend and early next week before the ridge builds in. 50 and sunny with dry air and not much wind doesn't have a big impact on the snowpack.

At least in the mid range... the GFS is caving to the ECMWF/EPS with a more solid ridge.

Perfect timing for our trip to the coast.  Going to Moclips and doing some hikes in Quinault that week.

That is really perfect timing... the coast might be as warm or warmer than the Seattle area.

Doing everything i can to try and make this trip happen to valdez, They look to get crushed in that area with storm after storm. Should be fun. About 4-5 days should do it and be enough time to avoid the heat wave here.

You better post lots of pics... have never had someone on here go to Valdez.    Do you fly to Anchorage and then take little float plane to Valdez?
