It actually makes sense that it occurred so "late" in the season. Since 500mb GPH is a factor of mostly the 950-500mb region, it is largely dependent on those temperatures. And guess when those temperatures bottom out? That's right, around late winter/early spring, since vertical temperature transfer is so delayed. And keep in mind that the high arctic is still cooling because they don't get sunlight until at least March 20th. The positive splats on windshield continued down into Portland. Precipitation was pretty heavy at the time. 43/36 here today and the last of that band pushing through.
