July 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

If we compensate for these warm anomalies with corresponding cold ones Dec-Mar I will not complain when we hit 109 next summer.

I'm curious what your guys' definitions of #IceBox is. If it's #no90's then maybe. Still, can be a warm month if there's a bunch of mid upper 80's.

Probably would mean just as many sub-80 highs as 80+ highs. Or in other words what used to be our normal summer weather.

For those that scoff at the potential for heat and drought related tree die off in the west, here’s how bad it’s been in California in recent years. And there is nothing that says our forests are immune to this sort of thing. Might just be a matter of time.

Sierra foothills in Fresno county. Taken summer 2015:

Then summer 2016 from the same viewpoint:

Pretty depressing to look at. Really need these excessively hot summers to stop

I remember when it used to snow in the summer here, now it is hot. I miss the good ol’ dayz.

I 'member back in the 'ol hay days, K-Falls would get supercells, baseball sized hail, and snowstorms so deep you can't even find your house.

Now we get these sissy storms. My flatulence kicks up bigger storms than those :P

I don't know about that...you strike me as someone with a pretty good imagination.

Touché.

And I’d rather think outside the box than inside the box.

Not only snow but the street cleaners would come down the block once a week! Now, not a street cleaner in sight. Indeed, the good old days

Interesting. Kirkland still has street cleaners. Probably see them every 2 weeks.

In other news... made it to 90 today

PDX up to at least 97 today. This heat has been kinda stoopid for a pretty run of the mill 500mb pattern. No real ridge over us, just zonal flow with height heights.

No kidding. Never would have guessed OLM would hit 94 today with this pattern. Not quite record territory, but D**n close.

You had no problem posting all of the the summer maps back in April. Hmm..I wonder why.

FWIW, that August projection will probably bust. Too much faux coupling to SSTs. I think September might verify decently, though.

That's because everybody was talking about summer forecast and what they were thinking would happen. Right now nobody is talking about Fall yet. Plus I didn't want to take up the whole page on the forum with pictures if I posted all the maps.

I'm thinking August will be cooler than July but still pretty warm overall. I'm actually hoping September is cooler than normal because once September rolls around I'm totally done with summer and ready for some stormy windy weather.

FWIW the December map looked good. Nice blocking and warm anomalies up in Alaska with an east coast ridge. The coldest anomalies in the continental US are in the PNW and west coast. Nice signal considering it's still far out. us_season-en-087-0_modezseason_2018070100_5_5436_528.pngus_season-en-087-0_modezseason_2018070100_5_5436_419.png

The good old days are still happening in Kirkland !

I don’t know why but loved them as a kid. We would sit on the curb and wait for them comng down the block. Street cleaners and the Goodyear blimp to fly over. Loved the loud engine

That would be a bizarre pattern for sure. Then again you guys always seem to blow your load in December, so it’d fit recent climatology to an extent.

I have noticed over the years that the grass up in my parent's area browns out very fast every summer.   Seems like maybe the soil is sandy in their area... which is very close to you.

Actually, it is quite the opposite at least for my neighborhood, but I think you told me once generally where your parents live, and I suspect they have the same soil composition as me.   I have a horrible thick clay that drains very poorly.  I had a Geologist friend look into the area I live in because we have such bad drainage problems  He said that we have a thin layer of topsoil over glacial fill/hardpan over bedrock all through here, with the depth to bedrock dependent on the location.  For my location, its around 70 feet, further to the north, it is over 170 feet, and for Squalicum Mtn, its about 9" of topsoil over bedrock.  We have a lot of springs in the area, and he said that water runs off Squalicum mtn and stays near the surface because of how fine the soil is (hence the springs).

I am in the process of putting in 2 sections of fence, and rented an auger to drill the holes.  I found there is on average about 8-16" of fill over hard pan.  One of the posts went in at one of the driest spots every summer and I ended up hitting a bunch of river rock about 8" down, and had to stop at about 16".  I'm guessing that is a drain field for one of the downspouts.  If my assumption is right, I guess that would explain why its so dry there.  The greenest areas coincide with the wettest areas in the winter.  While I had the auger, I also dug a hole where I suspect there is a spring, and it filled with water almost immediately.  The hole is about 2 feet deep, and even now, the surface of the water is within 12" of the ground surface.  I'm hoping to do a french drain this summer and give that water a place to go.

So, depending on the topography of their land, it could be that they have a bunch of topsoil brought in to fill in and level out the property?  I've noticed it has gotten progressively harder to keep my yard green as well, not sure what that is about....maybe I have gotten lazy about fertilizing, or maybe I just need to aerate it.

Youll piss your pants when you hear we are under a “heat warning” here. Every area has different thresholds depending on what is normal.

You would think people that get a lot of hot weather would get used to hot weather. Seems like most of the most populous places on earth are hot and humid locations.

Yeah, that kinda hurts Phil's "heat kills" argument.

The exceptionally dry warm season stretches in recent years could also be playing a role...

Nope. But both do kill.
