PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

I remembered you mentioning living in the high desert as a kid. Couldnt remember if it was NM or UT. This was our first time visiting the area and certainly wont be the last. The diversity of landscapes in such a relatively small space was incredible. Valles Caldera/the whole Jemez Mts drive was a big highlight along with the Tsankawi site. Also had no idea about the history of Los Alamos before driving through. Was definitely not expecting a government checkpoint heading up into the park lol.

A lot of those checkpoints are new. In the 70’s and 80’s you could drive through the area without having to go through any.

Can get really cold in that area in winter. I remember waiting for the bus on -20°F mornings. It is rare for a week to pass without a hard frost in the Valles Caldera. That is why there are no trees in it; it is an inverse tree line driven by extreme nighttime cold air pooling.

2:08 PM PST Monday 27 February 2023
Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta

Highly variable snow amounts over Metro Vancouver.

What: 2 to 4 cm, locally near 10 cm, of snow is expected across Metro Vancouver.

When: This afternoon through Tuesday morning.

Why: There is a small scale low pressure system near Vancouver Island which will cause bands of flurries to cross the Metro Vancouver area overnight and Tuesday morning. The precipitation will be convective, and snowfall amounts will be highly variable by location. In addition, elevation and proximity to the ocean will affect snowfall amounts. Most locations can expect 2 to 4 cm. Some locations may receive none, while others receive near 10 cm.

The morning commute will likely be affected. Prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and stay up to date with current forecasts at weather.gc.ca or use the official Environment Canada app WeatherCAN.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.

Grass looks greener than it did prior to putting a bunch of snow on it.

I noticed the same thing the few hours it was exposed yesterday!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

18Z ECMWF... definitely a shift north and warmer for the Seattle area after a band of snow in the early morning.

Snow through tomorrow evening and high temps tomorrow.

Shows 4” here but it’s so hard to feel confident in that based off recent trends and how things have been lately in marginal setups.

If PDX is 35 degrees at 4pm tomorrow I’ll get back together with Jesse.

Looks really good for PDX. Just gonna have to watch the radar and GOLU. Remember much colder airmass moving in tonight, well slightly cooler. lol

This would get me over 50" too.

It looks like more snow in some places compared to the 12z?

Here is a comparison between the 12Z and 18Z runs to exclude snow that fell today.   This is 7 p.m. tonight though 7 p.m. tomorrow.

12Z on top and 18Z on the bottom.
