That one was quite weak in the valley, with gusts 30-40 at best.

It’s interesting, the big region-wide storms generally end up on the lower end here locally. So many micro climates in the PNW.

This is kind of irrelevant to the thread topic, but wow that is just gobsmacking cold being modeled for Thanksgiving across ME/VT/NH/MA.

 

Maybe Wx_Statman would know more, but I can’t find anything quite that extreme on upper air re-analysis on/before T-day. At least not in recent decades (I didn’t have time to go all the way back).

More cold records falling everywhere but the west coast...shocker.

There is no drought because forks and north bend got lots of rain.

There is a no drought at all for NW WA...because its rained plenty this year. Even more than normal for some areas.

 

The drought issues are primarily in Oregon and far SW WA. But I don't live there so I don't know much about that experience.

I recall one perhaps in 2013 or 2014, where they had to close a bunch of roads along the Salish Sea in Oak Bay because logs and waves were literally being shoved onto roads. Gusts up to 75 mph I recall on that one.

I figured. I'm just more than a little annoyed how models are scaling back on both the wind and the rain of the Thanksgiving storm. It just annoys me that we never seem to have good storms anymore.

Therein lies the rub...

I still do not really understand why people would root for wind storms. To destructive for my taste.

Two reasons for me.

 

1) I make lots of money after a big windstorm. They’re actually an important source of income for me during the winter since work is relatively scarce otherwise.

 

2) They benefit the ecosystem in the long run. Weak trees (which are often over-mature) are taken down, which paves the way for forest succession and species diversity.

Almost everyone up here loves the breaks. Its universal... or socially unacceptable to admit you want it to be dark and raining every single day. That would be little creepy. And rain every day is not even climo of course... we normally have 8 or 9 nice days in November. God forbid people enjoy those days!

Yes, they do enjoy the dry summer weather, however they don’t have any AC, so the warmer summers lately have apparently been more uncomfortable for them. But come September, they’re all rooting for the rain.

Maybe we will spend 2-3 months in Hawaii each year... but I don't think we are ever moving.   We actually have beautiful summers and some of the best scenery in the country for being so close a metro area.   Hard to beat.    Just need to plan some warm weather trips to break up the rainy season.

I thought there were a couple in late 2014 that impacted a decent amount of people, and did produce severe level winds in places. Just not everyone though. Some of those even reached all the way down here.
