2/14-2/17 Possible Winter Storm Train

Minny_Weather

Just measured 6" or even slightly over.  And there is definitely compaction to account for.  The snow is actually slightly wet down here.

Bud, I cleared my snow boards at 7am during the first lull and then I cleared one again at 3pm and the other at 4pm.  This prevents excessive compaction during these long-duration events.  It doesn't make sense to let that first inch last night compact down to nothing as it continues to snow through today.

Measured 7.8" in Cedar Rapids at 5:30PM. Light snow is still falling, so we should be able to add at least a couple of tenths to our total which should be just enough to push my total to 8". There are a few 8 inch reports in Linn County so that seems reasonable.

Action Recommended: Issued by: Detroit - MI, US, National Weather Service,

...Brief Heavy Snow and Poor Visibilities A region of very heavy snow will continue to advance from Ann Arbor across the northern Detroit suburbs, and northern Wayne County and into southern St Clair County early this evening. The heavy snow will then come to an end from west to east. Snowfall rates in excess of an inch per hour at times has led to near zero visibility and snow covered roads. Anyone on the roads should drive with extreme caution. :D

EDIT: I am already approaching an inch!

Area of 6+ ended up being much more expansive than many models had it.

Wonder if that’ll expand to Dubuque. That 4.5” measurement came right before a little heavier snow fell. Either way, great storm. I was thinking the lower end of the 3-5 guidance, but I’m pleasantly surprised.

Long duration events always give me hope of making the higher end of guidance, so glad to see that happen.

That's the stuff that rolled thru here earlier when I posted I could barely see the school about 200 ft away! Enjoy. I measured and shoveled 1.8" from the first round. Have a solid 4" OTG this evening. Not sure if we get a 2nd round, or it fizzles east of IL??

Special Weather Statement in effect until 9:45 PM EST. Source: U.S. National Weather Service

The heavier snow which impacted the area earlier is quickly
diminishing as it lifts off to the east. There will be a lull in
the snow between roughly 8 PM and 10 PM before light snow expands
across the area. This second round of snow will be significantly
lighter than what fell earlier. Due to the brief but heavy snow
which affected portions of metro Detroit and Ann Arbor, which
resulted in 3 to 4 inches of snow within a couple hours, roads
will remain snow covered and slick this evening.

Just cleared another 1.9" of very fluffy snow which brings my total so far to 4.9".  An over achiever around these parts as I wasn't expecting to see this much and might tack on another 1" or so if the LES picks up.  The lake bands hitting the MKE area look rather nice and are forecast to swing down this way overnight.  Anyone getting hit by those up near MKE??

Glad for your nice surprise over-performer amigo  :)

Appreciate it...by tomorrow, this stuff will have compacted down to 4" its so dang fluffy unless we get more LES.  Excited to see what the landscape looks like tomorrow in the daylight.  Hopefully this snow will stick around for more than a few days but I have my doubts as the next weekend storm doesn't look good for us.  As they say, Enjoy the "Now Moment"...don't worry about the rest...

I am too. Tbh, they are useless. I have ova 4inches on the ground right now and round 2 knocking on my doorstep. This not only should have been a WWA, but more like a WSW. I am easily going at 5 or more by the time its all set and done. So far, its a 3-5inch range. That was a real heavy snowfall in such a short duration (2-3 hr event), wow. Very impressed.

My total is 8.3".  :D  It is still snowing, 24 hours after it started.  The rate is very low, but over several+ hours it adds up.  Radar shows the snow continuing for a while longer.

8.3" is my biggest snow event in four years.

I picked up another 1.5" last night since I went to bed.  I looked through the radar loop and there were a few waves of heavy LES that went through N Cook county.  This brings my storm total to 6.4" and more may fall throughout the morning if those bands continue to slide down the lake.  It looks stunning out side...#snowglobe

Taking a look at surrounding snow reports, I would have to consider myself pretty lucky as I pretty much cashed in quite well with those really intense waves of snow yesterday morning.  ORD has only reported 3" since midnight and I'm sure they tacked on more since then but those heavier bands were just north of ORD so its not really surprising they are reporting lower amounts.

LES bands continue to hit my area....Edit: I waited all season long for a system like this and its finally nice to see both synoptic and Lake Effect snow hit NE IL.  #don'tstop

I haven't checked my total since last eve when it basically quit accumulating. Measured 5.5" around 10 pm yesterday, after snowing most of the day. It was mostly light to moderate super fluff that melted about as fast as it fell in the afternoon, then accumulated a bit more in the evening. Just guessing that ratios may have been 20:1 after the morning band and just under 10:1 average Saturday night/Sunday morning. My gauge catch liquid total was 0.55" and core samples 0.45", but I don't really trust the cores this time as there was a bit of melting/settling going on even at below freezing temperatures.

Total snowfall from this unexpected storm was 6.6". Wow. I am very surprised that no advisories were put out.

This was definitely a WSW criteria. Very bad job per (NWS).
