Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

You don't have to go too far from either PDX or SEA to be in very snowy climates at least.

I think at some point I will want to move up to 1000-1500 ft for the sake of my own sanity. I don't really think I'd want to live in a place where it snows all the time because then it loses that magic, however it is just too rare and difficult to get even 2-4 inches down here on a consistent basis.

I prefer major cities or suburbs just outside of cities. I probably couldn’t live in somewhere like North Bend.

Outside of a few flakes snow has lifted NE. Need precip to start up again most of my light accumulation has melted. I think later this afternoon and tomorrow will be more solid for getting snow to stick around.

That’s really cool, good for you! I’m just not good at anything, so I’m not exactly looking forward to college to say the least.

That’s certainly not true. Again, you can do (almost) anything you put your mind to, if you would just get out of your own way.

If I’d had such a negative attitude and had convinced myself that I sucked at everything in life, I might not be here right now. We all suck at some things, and some of us learn differently than others, but we all can improve at (and even become great at) the things we originally sucked at. I’m an example of that (so far, at least..still have a ways to go). Sounds to me like you’re afraid to try/fail. That WAS me for a long time and it cost me so much time. I don’t want to see that happen to you, brother.

After this week’s brush, do you think we have any winter left in us Phil?

I highly recommend it. I'm pretty sure my area of South Everett averages close to a foot of snow a year. South Seattle and Downtown probably averages about a third of that.

It makes such a huge diifference to your psyche when your area almost always gets less snow. Makes what should be the happiest and most exciting weather of the year mostly a negative experience which is really sad when you think about it.

Agreed. Though I don’t feel negative like some will, it’s actually really nice to see people score when I don’t. It’s just that I’ve been thinking about relocating for a while and not because it’s weather related but the sheer madness of this city and commute. 1992 was much different than now.

I recently got settled down so it would be a good opportunity for us to go to a new area and an opportunity for better snow chances. My wife doesn’t like snow as much as i do but I don’t care lol

It isn't the big snowstorm it could have been, but this would still be fun by our standards here.

12Z GFS extracted text shows 0.35 in qpf for PDX before southerlies kick in and skyrocket the temp into the mid 30s. I'm surprised that doesn't match up to the snow map.

12z Euro shows another CZ forming tonight in much the same spot it did last night (North Seattle and Southern Snohomish County.)

Certainly bares watching as that model did quite well overall last night.

Looks like sticking snow level is between about 500-1000' in W. Oregon right now. Judging by radar and the temp drop from 37 to 33 at Santiam Park (El 900'), my place is probably doing pretty well right now.

Here's the latest HRRR through 10AM tomorrow. Most of this falls after 4PM.

Sh*t model but hey, it shows some snow so it's good for today! ;)

Is the HRRR really that bad? One thing I noticed is that it isn’t being referenced as much as it used to by the professionals.

FWIW, most models show a break during the afternoon before precip picks back up again tonight.

I'd rather it snow more tonight than today anyways - better chance at accumulations.

I think it'll be a fun night tonight! Colder air should filter south and precip should show up. Looks like the perfect set up.

My messages are no longer going through to my wife, so it is likely the snow has knocked the dish out of service. Either that or she finds me insufferable and turned her phone off...Probably both.

All that talk of a January 2005 style bust was all just talk???

From Seattle north, this will be a bit better. Down here, we will see. If PDX gets any snow Wednesday night then it will be a better outcome than that one.

I’m about to drive up to Council Crest to see how K-12 is doing.

If we could kill this south wind and keep some moisture around after dark I think it would be snow to the valley floor. Here in the mid-valley sticking snow is about 800-1000' right now.

Definitely higher than that in the metro area. It's still pure rain here and 36
