August 2023 Weather in the PNW

EPS seasonal now on board for the early start to autumn in the PNW. Solid western trough/eastern ridge look for September.

It goes by fast. I’ve had an account for almost 15 years now. Can’t believe it. Was 16 when I joined..am 31 now.

Also, holy STJ in Jan/Feb on EPS seasonal. Much more prolific than 2015/16 verbatim.

California is gonna have another rockin’ winter. Also a much better storm track out here, to the south. Last winter everything cut north and put us in the warm sector.

Obviously those criteria will not be met this year. Anything’s possible but I’ll wager there’ll be at least a few weeks where the pattern is favorable out there. Even if the winter is warm overall.

My early thoughts on winter - if it does deliver I feel like it will be in late November or December. 

February and March have had such a good track record in recent years I’m reluctant to think it’ll suddenly be a warm one even if the indices lean that way.

January simply doesn’t deliver anymore. Hope for average, expect a +5 megatorch.

If I do end up booking a trip somewhere for winter break this year expect a massive Arctic blast in late December. Seems like a Tahoe or Mammoth trip might not be a bad idea with that STJ.

Models being posted here earlier were saying 90s and 100s for around August 7th.  Even last week forecasts were showing at least 80s.  All that has tampered down greatly with highs dropping to the low 70s in Everett and some rain. So those models showing 120 in Portland 10 days away are very unlikely.  How have we not learned yet to not trust the models that far out? Lol!

Thursday was perfect, Friday was a little hot but it’s fun/terrifying to watch glaciers melt in 75 degree weather. Saturday was wonderful with light rain but a high cloud base around 10K ft. 
 

Close to zero snow on the trail, if it’s not at a record minimum for early August it must be close.

Worth mentioning that the EPS is looking much more reasonable.    It was showing mid 90s a couple days ago.

Interesting weather the last few days. Warm, muggy and mostly cloudy yesterday with an 83/65 spread.

Picked up about .05” rain this morning with a shower rotating in from the NE, and a low of 62. Was really nice to see. Ended up with a partly to mostly cloudy afternoon and a high of 80 today. Breezy NW winds and cooling off a little better tonight with lower DPs. 67 currently.

Another weirdly beautiful day. That stretch of highway 491 from Shiprock to Monticello was unreal. The way the setting sun hit the grass, and how the sunset perfectly alligned with not only the road, but also the high clouds and smoke, felt completely scripted. Now I am sitting at a rest stop on highway 191 near Sunnyside gawking at a night sky filled with more stars than I ever knew existed. The Milky Way seems so clear. Cherishing the moment.

My Mom grew up in Aneth. It’s a spooky place at night.
