Wish I was alive to have experienced this windstorm…Though I would have needed to be nearly 20yrs older to be alive and old enough fully remember it lol.

Wind estimated at 150kt gusting to 170kt at Cape Blanco. 👀 that’s stronger than Hurricane Andrew in Florida.

Had a 63/52 day Wednesday, some scattered heavy showers but most of the really heavy stuff was up toward Mount St Helens.

70/48 day yesterday, mild with east winds developing in the afternoon.

East winds intensified overnight with a mild low of just 58 so far. Looks like PDX didn’t even get below 60. Starting to look like this month is shaping up to be one of our warmer Octobers on record. All time record warmest was set just last year.

Well at least we had an average September and ended fire season on schedule. We all know in some sense the worm will turn.

Sunrise in Seattle... we are approaching the latest sunrise of the year in a couple weeks (at 7:57) which is matched again in late December after turning the clocks back in early November.

And yet there are crazies out there who think we shouldn't turn the clocks back in the fall.

Exactly. Stay on standard time. There is talk of staying on DST which would give us 9 am sunrises in mid-winter. No thank you.

My own private term for standard time is “the real daylight-saving time,” since it means earlier sunrises in winter, and morning light is more important to me than evening light.

It's called clown range for a reason.

The sun would be up at 3 am in June. Give me the 9 am winter sunrises, winter is mostly dark anyway.

History tells us that the current format is what most people at high latitudes prefer. They complain for 2 days per year and are happy the other 363. Prior attempts to remove DST have been quickly reversed. The only thing I would change is to move up "springing forward" to the first weekend in March.

I think compromise also plays into it. I don’t like DST, but I would rather have DST during the warmer months only than to have year-round DST. The resulting dark winter mornings of the latter would be truly depressing.

4:20 p.m. sunset is also considered depressing by many.   We can only move things around and can't change the reality that winter days are short and winter is generally dark.

I regret to inform you that those people along with you are wrong. Y'all can take my 2pm golden hours from my cold dead hands.

Also Anti-Mass is right, some of the most vocal people about DST on the west coast would complain for a couple days and probably would bitch that now it's too dark to go to school.

Great boon for seedy biki stand customers though who need that cover of darkness to purchase that 45 dollar latte.

I much rather come home to some light and have to drive in a little darkness to work than the reverse. Losing the late sunsets in summer would kill some of the glory of high lat summers.

For the life of me I can't find it, but a large newspaper (Seattle Times or WaPo, or NYT, or someone) did a write up about the "The Big Dark" in Bellingham back in 2014 or 2015. One thing that stood out was that long timers had acclimated to the darkness and the winter spaces people frequented where "nordic" in nature, warmer earth tones, cozy, warmly lit, and communal.

Also why Christmas lights are so popular in northern climates.

Having the later winter sunset would give folks a chance to get out after work/school...weather permitting of course.  Most people can't really do any thing with the "earlier"/current sunrise time we have because  they have to get to work/school.  Folks like to freak out about kids going to school in the dark, but they already do up here in Bellingham, and folks up in Canada, Alaska, etc seem to be able to get their kids off to school in the dark without issue.

On the summer side of things is to keep the late summer evenings when the weather is actually nice so we can enjoy it.  I personally would hate a 4am sunrise, recognizing that it gets like 30-45 minutes before that.

Can't mess with summer.   Earlier sunsets and daylight starting just after 3 a.m. is silly.     I am ambivalent to the winter clock schedule because it's not that meaningful... but think having the earliest sunset be around 5:20 is a little better than having more morning light.
