You just cannot leave the SEC out. The playoff would have no legitimacy without it. Personally I would have left Texas out, even though they beat Bama. Alabama went unbeaten in the SEC and beat Georgia. That should mean a lot more than some non-conference game in September. On the other hand, like I said. No way FSU would be competitive in the playoff, so in the end the fans win.

FSU played a garbage schedule and was without their QB. Putting them in over bama would have been a tragedy

2021-22 left a lot on the table. I have fond memories of it because of the week from Christmas to New Year's and then the April BLAST. If not for what happened in April I would have probably counted it as something of a disappointment. Last winter was the best I've had up here though, and it's not really even close.

Dec 2021 was fabulous up this way.  Good snow cover for several days and solid cold.

This warm sector stuff is the thing I hate the very most about this climate.

And at least down here the first half of November torched pretty hard, and we ended up solidly below average on the month.

It was good down here too. W. Oregon lowlands got a ton of snow starting on the 26th. We had 27.7" in December 2021. But after that good week it pretty much sucked until the end of February, and then we had the great event in April. If we could just have an awesome January... I wouldn't know what to do.

We got nailed later on in 2021 though.  The last two Decembers both delivered some true winter.

EDIT:  In 2021 we had 41/31 on Dec 3.

I think Winthrop hit 70 on 12/1 or 12/2 that year which is outlandish. Their old December record high had been 54. Pretty impressive stuff for a climate that definitely isn’t warming except for maybe a little in the summer but not any other season but that’s not a big deal anyway because at least it’s dry then.

Valley getting shadowed now. Looking at the radar it will continue for at least the next couple of hours as the bands are now training along the elevated terrain south of Salem, right up into this area.

A little light talk isn’t a big deal at all and should be expected to a degree. Big copy/pasted posts, and lengthy discussions/debates regarding the finer points of vicariously experienced sportsball can break up the flow of weather talk though. A separate thread seems like a reasonable compromise.

Anyone need a laugh? My neighbors rushed out to get studded tires. Not because they are traveling to Montana or anything like that. Nah. They told me they think the weather is going to get really cold because of something they saw on the internet. Their words "This guy said we're like in the vortex and its going to get cold" ... I almost smacked myself in the head when they told me this. I then nicely tried to explain the Polar Vortex, high arctic, lobes oscillating, and they looked at me like I was speaking Mandarin or something.

What do you do at that point? They told me the guy was very knowledgeable and knew a lot. I honestly just turned around muttering, "Have a nice night" and walked to my driveway.

Sometimes people at work talk to me like they know anything about the weather because they look at weather apps a few times a week 😂.
“It’s not gonna rain until 430PM!”

“my weather app says we’re only supposed to get 1/2”

Need @Phil to tell us why or why not the zonal wind anomaly matters more/less than this, or how/why this disconnect between the two happens

The warming is caused by adiabatic compression as pressures rise within the weakening vortex.

What “matters” more than anything is how the PV is affected structurally. Is it a wave-1 (displacement) SSW? Or is it a wave-2 (split) SSW? And is the vortex (or daughter vortices, in the case of a split) displaced well off the pole, with high pressure taking over (hence a reversal in zonal winds)?

All of that matters more than the warming itself, which is a result of mechanical perturbation by wave activity.
