Might have been posted already. But Alberta’s power grid is struggling under the demand in this cold snap

That's not good! I have a sister and brother-in-law who live near Edmonton.

Us northerners would have put that moisture to good use with a proper snowstorm (containing proper soft fluffy snow, none of this tacky sleet and ice stuff you southerners seem so fond of). But nooooooo, “It’s our turn,” you said “we’re due.”

Well. All. Righty. Then.

So far my highest temp this January has been 43 degrees on the 3rd. Impressive.

52 in North Bend on 1/3.    I think your area is just more protected overall.

Well! That was quite the event :) Though we didn't end up with the snow amounts I would've hoped, this was still one of the most memorable winter weather events I've had. The combination of wind and cold is really exceptional in my experience; the type of stuff you'd expect in the NE, not here! The duration of cold and wind is also impressive - both have been sustained throughout the day. We're in the SW hills at 600 feet.

Our high for the day was 16.5 at midnight, low of 10.2 degrees around 2:45 pm. Currently it is 11.1 degrees, so we've had 9 hours below 12 degrees. That is just exceptional back to 1990 (which I don't remember details of too well since I was only 6!) I'd assume we stay at roughly this temp through tomorrow AM, and a lot of stuff is going to freeze. I want to check out the pond and Laurelhurst park on Monday to see if its frozen over - I don't think its done that since 1990 or 1992.

Peak wind gust was 36.7 mph - wind gauge is about 6ft off the ground, so gusts higher up in the trees were even greater. Since about 10pm last night, we've had consistent wind gusts above 15 mph, with regular gusts consistently above 20 mph since 12pm today. Windchill has been consistently below zero since 9 am. Winds are still going strong!

Currently, looks like about 2-3 inches of mixed precipitation, though the snow is so dry it's hard to tell what's snow and what's sleet. Enough to make the grass and streets white up here :) Though in wind-exposed areas, it's all dry ground. Some of the larger drifts are 6-8 inches deep.

HRRR shows maybe a lucky inch or two between now and midnight, but even if we don't seen any more snow, today was a great weather day and one of my top 5 storms. My favorite video of the day below.

Totally agree with this.  As my eye doctor told me today, ‘Your poor vision is caused by having a lot of birthdays’ today is right up there.  About 3” of snow all happening at 16-19 degrees. Should be a spectacular day tomorrow.  Such a rarity is these parts.  I keep looking at my weather station waiting for the inevitable warm up, but it is going the other way.  16 freaking degrees on the west side of the Cascades!!!

They weren't due though.  See Feb 2023.

I remember January 2005. We didn’t top 40 through mid month and then we absolutely torched for 2 weeks.

This will not be a memorable event for me.

Statistics aside, most people in Western Washington just want some snow in their back yard.

0 degrees, 23 degrees, -45 degrees........whatever

Did we get any snow?  No?

Okay, next.

Unfortunately I agree. It's just boring without snow. Actually I find the cold really unpleasant. I like being outdoors and I love a nice walk in a winter wonderland but everything is just ugly and uncomfortable. Makes you just want to stay inside.

00z NAM is 8mb stronger than the 18z but almost in the same location through hour 78. Would be nice and snowy North of Everett.

18z NAM has 984mb to Westport/Aberdeen. Pretty rare to see that strong a storm make landfall that far South.  If it went out further it would definitely lead to a lot of snow North of Seattle.

Looks like Tuesday night is a border special. Been burned too many times with a set up like this to get too excited.

Your location isn’t in your bio so it’s hard to know. I assume some where around Seattle?

It's also the type of set up that brings the biggest snowfalls to Seattle usually.

And they are always a close call

North Seattle area. As is, the event looks borderline here, which in recent years never works out for us.

Low expectations for now. If the ensemble means over the next 48 hours trend towards a landing just south of the Columbia, then this event will have my attention. Until then, this will be rain for Seattle south.

Incredible storm here in Redmond today. Started snowing this morning around 5:30 with strong north winds all day. Temp hovered between 2 and -5 throughout this event. It just now has tapered off some with just flurries now. Snowed hard all day. Would say a good 12-13” in my backyard. Cold the next couple of days with highs in the teens and lows around 0. This is what we watch the models for throughout winter and finally it paid off. January curse is over.

Love the optimism. We shall see what happens. For my own sake and productivity though, I don't want to invest too much into this event until I see more clustering of ensemble members at or below the mouth of the Columbia.
