March 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

So we shouldn't root for what makes us PNW'ers cold and wet in the winter, because we might be anlittle warmer and dryer in the summer?

Wet in the winter and dry in the summer will cause much less drought here than avg in winter, avg in summer.

Wet in the winter and unusually dry in the summer has caused lots of problems in recent years on this side of the mountains in terms of tree health.   I don't think average in the winter and average in the summer causes major drought issues.

True. Although I meant to say dry in winter, avg in summer, said avg twice by accident.

My intended point was that our summers are already dry, our winters aren't. A below average winter will cause a much larger deficit on the water year than a below avg summer. This doesn't mean that I root for dry summers, I love it anytime it rains in summer, but I'd choose an avg winter over an avg summer.

If anything the axisymmetric components of this niña transition are worse for North America in terms of heat/drought than early the 2020s. Don’t think there will be any “blue” colors anywhere on JJA CONUS temperature maps this summer, not even in the PNW.

People living in the Midwest and Plains should be in panic mode. That area looks like ground zero for hellfire (shifted a bit from 2021 & 2022 but same general theme).

They makes sense.   The difference between average and dry in the summer is minor in terms of annual precip.

Nah, Mossman wears black-frame glasses. Like the hybrid offspring of Jesse’s hipster glasses and Tim’s Harry Potter glasses.

Ended up with a 65/39 spread here. Blue skies with scattered cumulus, then more high clouds moving in later in the afternoon. Beautiful day.

NW wind has picked up a bit this early evening. Down to 59 currently.

Summer ☀️ grows while Winter ❄️  goes

Really gorgeous sunset from mt bachelor's webcam, I'm sure everyone in the willamette valley got quite the sunset too , because most of the upper clouds were that way. 11.thumb.jpeg.5f5d1afdb521a880df1e8f1c3284c9f8.jpeg

Today's Meadows day (#2)

Firm to start, then softened up nicely.

First time up Vista today, and in my top 4 runs in Oregon (Hoodoo Over Easy and Bachelor Leeway and Wynoga Way to White Bark are the other 3). Whopee should be a blue (final pic) I hate my anxiety (triggered during Whopee) I'm in the hospital for a friend now as he crashed during my last run. At least Meadows has one on site that has our needs (stitches).

One of my friends from Arizona has come back to visit this weekend and we are out sitting by the fire pit and despite the fire pit being pretty warm and keeping me warm. He says that he is cold and he’s in a thick jacket and sweatpants and I’m in a sweatshirt and shorts and I was getting kinda hot so I turned the fire down and he said not to because he was cold. It is 39 degrees but I think it feels pretty nice out here right now especially by the fire pit.

NWS blend for the eclipse, has trended worse for Missouri and Illinois. I've practically given up on Texas which is a real bummer.cloudcover_labeled.conus.thumb.png.a42e8140a71b36bfd5286af78b4ce841.png

Classic spring crash coming on Wednesday.  Been awhile since we've seen a really dynamic spring with lots of warm up/cool down theatrics. Lately it's been stuck pattern followed by stuck pattern.

Hopefully we can see more thunderstorm days this spring, here we've already have had two this year (Jan 24th and Mar 27th). There were some nice ones last year in May and September

Awfully dry out this morning for egg hunts but a traffic cam tour indicates MOST people are pressing on anyway. The resiliency of PNW’erners knows no bounds!

It's horrible.  We desperately need it to never stop raining per climo.   No blessings today.
