There are a few like 1916, 1924, and 1964. Based on this and some other years I've been looking at there two likely scenarios emerging. One is we continue to see the recurring cold snaps with a climax of a major blast in December. The other is for pretty much steady cold (with a few breaks of course) through January and probably into February. If we have the major blast in December the remainder of the winter will probably be relatively mild. It's as if the big stuff holding off keeps the overall cold regime going. Jesse
Already down to 32 this evening, after a chilly partly to mostly sunny day with light winds. 45/31. First time this season we've had a clear day and I can see snow on Silver Star and Larch to the east. Sounds like that won't be going away anytime soon.

Then a sharp but short Fraser River blast December 18-19, which produced a 23F high at Bellingham.

BLI snowman
I think this is a pretty typical Nina November, really. A wet and active November with a consistent jet aimed right at us is a pretty easy call with a 1st year strong Nina. 1998, 1988, 1973, 1942... all pretty similar. Those years all featured some significant midwinter blocking and arctic air at some point, so it's the general trend you'd want to see to continue towards that path. 5

Interestingly...earlier this evening I found that 1924 was one of the La Nina seasons that had a number of early cold snaps. All of those small cold snaps eventually culminated in one the all time great cold waves for our region. As an example this is a list of the lows in Landsburg, a place just 5 miles from here. Beginning with the 16th...13, 3, 0, 4, 14, 23, 6, 7, 7, 8, 10. That came after 11 inches of snow fell. I could live with a redux! 2 Quote Death To Warm Anomalies!
