December 2018 Weather in the Pacific Northwest

1926 also had a really nice spring.   

 

March and April were beautiful.   April of 1926 had 15 days over 70 degrees at Snoqualmie Falls and a few mid 80s thrown in for good measure.   May was pretty typical.   But then June was back to spectacular... only about .50 of rain total and only 3 days with measureable precip.   Then no rain at all in July... a total of 0.00 here in the Cascade foothills.

 

Actually there was zero precipitation here for almost 2 months... from 6/21 - 8/15.

 

A summer that makes 2015 and 2017 look a little damp.

August 1926 was actually one of our wettest on record down here. I think there was a big thunderstorm outbreak that month.

Must have been thunderstorms up here as well.   Snoqualmie Falls had just about 1 inch of rain on 8/26/1926 with a high of 78... and then a high of 75 the next day.   

 

A genuine storm at the end of August would result in highs in the low to mid 60s.  

 

A real storm must have come through on 9/16 because the high was only 53 with almost half an inch of rain.

Just me. Other people love snow, correct? Storm chasers in the Midwest get a thrill chasing tornadoes and supercells. Some people love sun, others constant rain. I like wind. Nothing wrong with it, just the way it is.

You’d really love our downslope wind machine. Seldom do we make it through a winter without at least one 60+mph wind event along/west of the fall line. And the 40+ stuff is a dime a dozen come F/M/A.

 

It always finds an excuse to be windy during late winter/spring. Our company makes almost as much money handling trees and roofs as we do with the typical spring cleanup jobs.

Well hopefully no one would actually commit suicide over sunny weather. What really sucks about this winter is we've been pretty cloudy and drippy for the past 10-12 days now and torching out of our minds.

I'd love to visit the East Coast right before a nor'easter. It doesn't look like PDX will be getting a 55+ wind event anytime soon.

The big ones are an adrenaline rush, that’s for sure. Especially when it’s snowing instead of raining. But usually it’s the coastal areas and New England that get the strongest NE winds. We don’t usually get those..ours are the mountain wave winds from the W/NW that occur on the back quadrant of low pressure systems.

I wish there was more snow in the mountains for sure... so colder would be better.  

 

But I have not really been bothered by the weather over the last 10-12 days.    There have been lots of breaks in the rain and some sun at times between storms.   I have seen much worse warm and wet patterns... like when it literally rains non-stop for a week.

This weekend on the GFS is looking a lot snowier in the mountains.  Not sure if it is more moisture, or maybe a bit cooler, or both.  Definitely cooler for my area, previous runs had a snow in the morning with rain and very mild temps for Sunday afternoon, but now it stays snow the whole time.   Or maybe as we get closer it handles local terrain better.

I was in Oklahoma for a week and other than the one day it rained it was sunny with highs 55-60. Absolutely glorious. It is so dark and depressing this time of year when we have this kind of pattern. Pretty warm everywhere but AK and central Asia at the moment. But that does look to change.

 

Next week, eastern Europe, western North America, and especially east Asia should turn much colder. Kim Jong-un will be freezing his supreme leader balls off.

Yeah and most of NW Oregon was about 2-4 degrees below average during that time. I thought we were talking about the two week torch fest. The weather is going to be genuinely awful here if we torch, so we may as well root for cold. Even cool/cold and wet is better with low snow levels and much more fun weather to track.
