I’m sure it’s nothing new for them, but that’s one monster storm over Iceland after hour 240. Dips down to 919 mb at one point, which is actually unusually powerful even for that area (record low pressure for a cold-core storm is 912 back in 1993).

Yeah TWL is right. It's a great block, but a pretty pedestrian pattern at the surface here. Chilly but nothing too exciting.

I think the thing that pushed me over the edge here in Bellingham is the push to do away with natural gas in homes by 2035...15 years away.  So, in an area that most can barely afford to live, they are going to have an eventual retrofit requirement on existing homes (10-20k), and will push everyone to a resource that costs at least twice as much to get heat from....Oh yeah, and we are trying to tear down all the dams so where are we going to get this newly required electricity?

 

Its going through city council right now.

 

It'll cost at least $20K to move to ME or NH, and then if what you said about property tax there is true, in 6 years or so there goes another $20K. Something's gotta be done to cut carbon emissions, and residential heating is a big part of it. And New England has the highest heating costs outside of Alaska; don't think you'll get lower utility bills by moving there.

 

I do share your skepticism about tearing out dams; as bad as the dams are, hydro is carbon-free power.

Most people living west of the Cascades are clueless about the real reason for dams. It is for irrigation. And, like you said, carbon free.

At this time ten  years ago I was in Bartlesville, OK and had just gotten married to my first wife a couple weeks before. There was snow on the ground and the next day would be cold with a 32/11 split. 

 

I had two wives and 4 kids in the past decade. lol

Yeah, an ensemble mean of -7C anomalies for this time of year that far out is pretty impressive. Tons of potential ahead.
