I assume you're talking about 2017? There was definitely Arctic outflow through the Gorge for the Portland area, but I was talking about regional events.

I was off a year.  Wasn't '12.   My coldest temps.  were in Dec '13.  '17 definitely had Gorge outflow.  I don't remember any  in Dec '13.  Had it stuck in my head it was '12.  I don't remember if Dec '13 was a regional event or just localized but it's the coldest I've had in some time.  More snow in '17 but not nearly as cold. 

The creek froze over enough to hold my 150lb newfie.  Two mornings of 8f and a couple days in the low 20's for highs.  It stayed cold for over a week in '13.  Can't remember how the rest of the metro did.  I'm about 15 miles ESE of the metro by way the crow flies.

Almost identical. But this is where we need it to follow suit. Days 6-9 is where the block builds in nicely on the 12z.

Trough centered around the 8th digs a little better than the 12z.

 

The ensembles show that one has some room to trend colder.

At hour 240 the block is further west, heights are actually higher over the Aleutians, everything is just about 400 miles west.

My current conditions...And light index. Not very high today and since taking the pic it has dropped more, down to 5.14.

Definitely more realistic. The overall picture remains the same but the coldest air stays pretty well bottled up with the fairly tepid upper level support.
