December 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I want to stay near the coast (which pushes the prices up a bit). Found one house that would have been perfect, and was covered in about 4-6" of snow, but I need to figure out the job market first. I still need to pencil out our housing budget, property tax appears to be almost double what I am paying in B-ham. I pay about $4k in taxes, and it looks to be $7.5-8k for a house of equal value out there.

I have a good friend who lives near Portsmouth on the NH/Maine border, and I plan to pump him for information.

I don't really want to leave Washington State, but I am not liking the direction that Bellingham politics is going, and I really don't want to live or work in Seattle (even though I have applied to Alaska Airlines, Amazon and Microsoft). My wife and I are taking the next couple of months to figure things out. If we do stay, I might look into something down in Mossman's neck of the woods, or maybe up towards Tim's world there towards North Bend.

This state is getting downright stupid with the current decision makers...Hopefully that changes. Going be an awful day if they get away with putting trackers on your cars/trucks and charging you by the mile that is supposed to replace the gas tax but you and I know that will not happen. Getting a little scary. Anyway with that said it’s hard to go wrong right now in my area, 5min drive to I-5 but you feel like you are way out away from it all...Not to mention the microclimate... it’s wonderful!

Kelowna, BC ensembles shows potential for big league cold into Southern British Columbia. Mean temp -15c, but several members to -25c and some are even colder than that. That's more like it.

Goes to show you what a cold outlier the op was the last two runs in LR.

You sound like a spoiled br@t sometimes. All in good fun though kid. We all would love some weather. I haven’t had any either since the day before bird day, aside form the few brushes of freezing fog or the one wind event we had about two weeks ago. Not much for central Oregon.

Aww, spoiled brat? ;)

That was way too easy.

Triple 7s are beasts.

Yeah that was like a summer breeze for the 777! However...I would be shitting my pants if I was onboard for this takeoff in a 767!

On another (hopefully more analytical note) the Vancouver (B.C) area may need to watch out. EURO shows a crazy strong pressure gradient over the area on Thursday, with that model showing winds gusting upwards of 65 mph in spots. However, GFS shows next to nothing, so take it with a grain of salt considering the EURO lately.

That takeoff run seemed way too long.

Here’s a 777 landing on a gusty day at SeaTac.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to be on it.

I think the thing that pushed me over the edge here in Bellingham is the push to do away with natural gas in homes by 2035...15 years away.  So, in an area that most can barely afford to live, they are going to have an eventual retrofit requirement on existing homes (10-20k), and will push everyone to a resource that costs at least twice as much to get heat from....Oh yeah, and we are trying to tear down all the dams so where are we going to get this newly required electricity?

Its going through city council right now.

Seattle is doing something similar - but just for new construction...which I can kinda understand if you're thinking long-term sustainability. I would miss my gas stovetop though.

However, forcing people to retrofit their existing homes is ridiculous.

Oregon just seems to be immune to above average precipitation in winter nowadays. Luckily there is hope in the models.

With the 2020's approaching, I wonder if we'll see more Decembers like 2015 in the future. A legitimately wet month.

Winter has probably been one of the consistently wetter seasons in the last several years. The rest have all been drier relative to average.

It doesn't seem the rain has been nearly as spread out as it normally would be the last several years. It has come in big spurts instead.

Pretty anemic rainfall so far this evening.

The upslope has been sustaining it here.

I’ve legitimately watched dozens of these crosswind videos from Düsseldorf. Amazing stuff.

Both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 meteorological winters had below average precipitation at PDX.

Yeah, I realize those are the only two winters you can remember. Different story if you look at the last several years overall, though. Dry summers, Springs and falls have generally been more common.

It has definitely felt that way.

I thought the stat about PDX just having experienced their two driest back to back years on record was pretty interesting. Seemed to get quickly swept under the rug by the raininistas, unfortunately.
