Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

I ended up with exactly 2 inches of snow for yesterday and it's still snowing.  Very slow accumulation tonight, but it's adding up.  I was pretty surprised by the dramatic change in snowfall coverage for tomorrow night on all models.  Another step like that and it could nail everywhere from Olympia to Bellingham.

 

FWIW the control model on the GFS ensemble shows another significant cold wave later in the month with a 5 day period of 850s -8 or lower..  There has been some hinting of that.

Very light snow falling in West Seattle after ceasing earlier in the evening. Hopefully the precip rates pick up later this morning. Around 1/4 of an inch currently on the ground.

I'm pretty happy the models are trending a bit less crazy on the east winds on Wednesday.  A few runs earlier looked pretty scary actually.  I think too much of the strong high pressure remains up north for anything too bad.

Very unique looking setup with that steady stream aimed at us. My gut is the next 36hrs are going to be much more snowy than many people are expecting from Tacoma north.

I would give anything for that NAM run to verify. So far it’s done a decent job with precip last 36 hours

Wow. Finally got caught up from all the drama that occurred in the last 15 hours.

 

Today was a chilly one with a midnight high of 29F and a slow drop to 22F. Just popped back up to 23F.

 

Oh, and after 24 hours of radar incineration, one scraggly shower made it through the Skagit County dome and made me extremely happy. Now we have an optimistic 0.25" on the ground which makes everything look slightly white!

The Langley Hill radar continues to shows a steady steam of moisture flowing in off the ocean.  Things should look pretty around here by morning.  That thing tomorrow evening looks extremely interesting to say the least!

Pretty cold out there tonight.  Even places like the Evergreen Point Bridge are below 30 now.  Lots of 20s on the map from Tacoma north.

Yup.  Even the ECMWF made a huge step in that direction.  A pretty dramatic change.

27° with Light accumulation, but completely snow covered in Marysville on all surfaces. Commute will be terrible with those icy + snowy roads.

I'm happy to see my Western Washington weather geek brethren seeing all of this snow.

 

Is all hope lost for PDX? Maybe. Maybe not.

 

3:30 AM The Dalles 24, light snow. Hood River down to 30. Underwood 27. Modified arctic air is now nearing Wyeth. Next stop to the west after that would be Stevenson/Cascades Locks. It was not forecast to even make it to The Dalles this soon and it most certainly has. Interesting. The snow cover from Hood River to Pendleton is going to be huge for us once the east wind cranks up.
