Part II- January 2020 Obs and Discussion

Wow. That is exactly what I was saying last week. There is a little snow on the ground somewhere. Shut it down!

Ahh. So there was a follow-up tweet... tomorrow happen to be their typical early release day anyway, so they didn’t want to do a 2-hr delay. Plus the chance of snow.

Guess it make sense. Kinda?

What’s weird is that it’s so cold here yet within about 24 hours it will be raining and melting. The cold can hold on for a bit up against the Coast Mountains and particularly in the eastern Fraser Valley, but Bellingham is perfectly placed to get the mild marine air the moment the wind shifts. It will be as sudden and dramatic exiting the arctic blast as it was entering it.

And then with one little meso low if you get any drainage the temp will fall immediately. Always had fascinated me through the years. Our weather would be much different here without that frasor canyon.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

4.5" today makes it the snowiest day here since February 2011!

Just over 1.5" since I got home at 7 p.m. and snowing lightly with my current high for the day of 25.6F.

Seeing the 30s just a couple miles south of me definitely scares me, though. As the temp warms my snow is continuing to compact.

ECMWF shows low 40s even up to Bellingham by Thursday.    As was mentioned... the switch in Bellingham usually happens very quickly since they are so exposed and a SE wind is downsloping up there.

Still quite snowy in Victoria, steady around 26F. Looks like the band is starting to intensify, the next few hours could be interesting.

It has eased off here. Just missing us to the south. How much new did you get so far this evening? I’d guess only about 2.5” here.

Surprisingly... Friday might actually be a dry day.   Those have been so rare lately.

This is the precip map for Friday afternoon... not just snow.

Strange that the band shrunk from the north.   But its definitely coming back for you!

Yes. Looks like we might get another 4” overnight. Took my girls out for a sled this evening. They loved it. I think my 2 year old loves snow as much as me.

22F here. It’s been awhile since I can remember such cold snow

Very cool.

My son came home from UW in Seattle today to see our snow and also to go skiing. And to scold his mother for being such a wimp with winter driving. Seems like yesterday when I was out sledding with him as a little kid. He was fascinated by snow even at a very young age. Has never changed. :)

It's hard to tell how much fell this evening vs the earlier in the day (~2.5" fell in the morning/early afternoon), but I'm guessing about 5~6" so far this evening based on recently cleared road. Noticing a lot of icicles on the street lights, something I haven't seen much of in other recent snowfalls.

Glad to see Bellingham and Victoria score though.

In 50 years when weenies are discussing the roaring 20s and how epic the winter weather turned in the PNW they will mention it got off to an inauspicious start in 2020 with a regional dud. "BUT!" Someone will chime in. "There was a brief, but intense Frasier River blast in mid-January."
