Is the shield of overcast reaching up there at least? That should help. I love that we’re getting cold and snow when sun angles are still so weak they’re barely a factor.

Yep! My favorite time for this to happen is dec1 through Feb 1. Those sun angles make a huge difference with road melting.

Don’t expect the sleet to last too long. The energy late afternoon could give Clark county 1-2” an hour snowfall rates if everything works out.

Once that low center gets underneath you the cold will deepen quickly.

A bit of a lull at the moment, been mainly sleet.  Seems to be a heavy bad moving through Salem, hopefully it'll bode well for my area if it can hold.

My brother just texted and said he’s at 19.4 with heavy sleet. He sent me this pic a couple hours ago.

I can tell you for a fact a little after Feb 1 can be ok too.  In Feb 1989 roads that were in the sun all day stayed totally white.

Valentine’s Day has always been the cutoff in my mind for true mid-winter like conditions to be possible. But it’s still nice to have this happen in the relatively short days of mid-January. We’ve had a lot of mid to late February events lately.

Incoming comma!   Nice structure to this storm.     And in Bellingham its sunny.   I can see the sun through the cloud deck here but it's has zero warming effect.

21 F and all snow here in Beaver country.

Since there are no hills nearby some kids are trying to sled by holding on to a rope attached the back of a pickup truck. Average college student shenanigans 🤣

Have not seen any actual snow in my (SW) part of town.  Light ZR glaze then around an inch of sleet.  Switched back to ZR while I was out walking over the last couple of hours and now have sleet mixing back in.  About 0.2" of ice accumulation, I'm feeling like we dodged a bullet with this one.  Temp steady at 23-24.

It's pretty amazing how close this was to a real crusher for Seattle.

Crazy that while we are experiencing extreme cold/snow/wind, 2 NFL wildcard games this weekend are being impacted by winter weather as well. They just postponed the Bills/Steelers game because of blizzard conditions to Monday. They were thinking of postponing the Chiefs/Dolphins because of extreme cold/windchill but they decided to move on with the game. This storm will be forever remembered as the NFL Wildcard Saturday PDX blizzard snow/sleet/wind storm! 🥶

Weather.com seems to think we get 8-12" still. I think we have 1-2" right now, too much wind to tell though

Yeah this low is gonna need to put in some work this afternoon for us to crank up the accumulations. I am probably in the 1.25-1.5 inch range right now and there is a lot more sleet now, maybe 50% sleet falling.

Hopefully mid levels start to cool soon.

I would do anything possible to keep the house warm.  Camp stove, gas cooking range if he has that, wood stove, whatever.  The sad fact is many people have no backup heat source these days.

He’s got a wood burning fireplace and gas stove so he’ll be ok.

The heavy snow has tapered off here but looks like juicier moisture is about to arrive soon in the Metro area.

Why do I feel so sad and disappointed that the temp is all the way up to 18 degrees now? I would have killed for mid 20’s just a few days ago. Something serious wrong with me 😂

Enjoying a little outdoor fire now.

Yeah we’re probably 60/40 snow right now, but it seems to change by the minute.

Maybe but looking at radar and hi-res models it appears that the main precip focus is moving north of us and also the upper levels are cooling from here on out so I'm thinking we've passed our peak icing potential.

Even if all of the remaining ~0.4" of QPF were to fall as ZR we would be mostly OK, but that seems unlikely with the current transition back to sleet moving past peak heating.  I feel confident in saying the 1" of ice scenario is not happening here.

Heading over to our house by the gorge. Current temperature there is just 1. Also some snow cover over there too. In north bend right now where the east winds are ripping.
