God I love winter. I’m not ready for big thaw next week. :(

We’re about to waste 2-3 weeks on a Pineapple Express pattern thanks to the big AAM spike & WPAC MJO. Basically a repeat of the December pattern.

The big thaw is happening here too. We are all in this together.

Where do you get the 500mb charts for that era?

Unfortunately they only go back to 1948. I'm more  just recreating that in my head based off of what I know from the the temperature and weather patterns those winters.

1889-90 most likely had the strongest SE ridge on record for DJF. Just unbelievably warm and dry there and equal parts unbelievably cold and snowy here. To this day it remains Atlanta's warmest DJF on record by a full 2 degrees. The next warmest there are 1879-80 (!) and 2016-17 (!!). All Nina years and the latter of which we know we had a remarkably persistent SE ridge/NW trough pattern over North America since we all lived it.

1916-17 also had a remarkably persistent troughing pattern over our region throughout it, with a major Aleutian ridge and downstream trough that just parked over us in February/March. As luck would have it that was the first season that Paradise recorded snow. Their snow depth that season peaked at 327" in April 1917, a value bested only by a fellow super-Nina in 1956. Definitely a testament to the historical prowess of these high-end ENSO events. They stand out amongst their peers even a century back.

Whelp, not much of an event for the Covington area. Some nice chilly days and a glaze of ZR for a day or two.

RSV is finally making its way out of the house (after COVID for the last half of December). No more bugs, please.

Well if you are following the MossMan 2022/23 sickness analog, the Flu will be next! It was one right after the other last winter.
Hopefully you can avoid it though.

I think we came close to sub freezing. It was 28F when I left my house around 1pm but I don't believe we got above freezing per nearby WU stations.

My wife's best friend made her flight and was picked up by another friend even with some freezing rain on the Palouse.  Minimal or almost no ice event here. Wife's doctor said she had to have emergency surgery at a different hospital 45 mins away and it couldn't wait another day. Spouse was super bummed because her mom's celebration of life is tomorrow afternoon and she had already made arrangements to go and she might not get back in time to give her speech or even attend. She didn't leave until dinner time so it's unlikely. At least the bestie has a medical background and is staying with her tonight. This is the friend who is from Florida and thinks 50F is cold, meanwhile today was the warmest it has been in 8 days.

As for the weather, it is 23F. I'm impressed with the persistent cold. Last year's snow total was 13.9. I have 13.8 so far. I need one more snow event somehow to pass that year. Way behind the previous two though.

I will say even though I only got half an inch of snow it was nice it was able to stick around until this morning. Ground was white for a couple of days and it was at least something.

Pretty good gfs run  interesting to see decent patterns showing up already in clown range.

It’s an interesting evolution, but that GOA ridge is really popping as the trough dives into California and a ton of cold starts surging into Western Canada. Overall a lot less torching on this run and more of the precip falls as mountain snow which is nice!

There is a TON of cold air in Canada on this run, I thought it would be a few weeks before we saw this.

Ended up with a 39/32 day here. Some morning glaze left over from the zr last night, then partly to mostly cloudy with some afternoon sunbreaks, and staying chilly with east winds.

Today was my 7th consecutive day with a high in the 30s or colder, and 6th consecutive day with some sort of snowcover. Not too bad for mid-January these days!

Back down to 32 tonight after topping out at 35.6.  Still have full ground coverage of snow, and in all reality, we really didn't lose all that much all things considered.

I read a rather humorous post on Next Door about the snowplows pushing snow up against mailboxes and the entrance into driveways.

I guess in other parts of the country when snowplows go through the snow magically disappears.  Clearly another case of taxpayer money being wasted in Washington state since our government didn't pony up the extra money for magical snowplows.

When I lived in Bartlesville, Oklahoma we had a 14" snowstorm in late November, 2006. It did not appear there was any attempt made to plow anything other than the state highways. I remember walking for a couple miles to go to a friends house several days after the snow fell, because the residential streets were completely impassable. There is also a lot of drifting out there when it snows, so that made it even worse.

Definitely seeing some ensemble improvement that first week of February. Nothing too exciting yet other than a strong signal for some major east coast ridging and torching. All the way up into Eastern Canada.

28 hours without power 😞 I looked at the outage map and it shows no outage in my area but that's not true 😡 I want to tell my sister (because it's in her name) but she's asleep. Last time I checked, it was 57 degrees in the house but that was 6 hours ago. It's getting hard to sleep in the cold. It reminds me of when I was homeless in 2015. Memories I really don't want to remember 😕 I hope PGE gets the power back on soon 🙏

My wife and I were without power on Sun night into Mon when we went to bed and the temp dropped to 20F. We had no heater except one another. This, combined with the occasional crack of a tree branch breaking somewhere close by was one of the more anxious nights I can remember. It was tough to keep it together.

Then during the next night it melted, the house was cold and had no power. Once again, in bed with no heater. This time with constant cracks, pops, booms, and the thuds of old trees falling in town. Sirens in the distance. Rough to sleep when it’s that cold.

I totally understand what you both went through. This cold is bringing back old memories I don't want to remember. My anxiety is in full force right now. I just need to remember that I do have a roof over my head and that I'm not outside in the elements. 🙏😕

Most places in the 30s this morning... while the North Bend area is in the low 40s.     If you are a cold weather fan the east wind is a double-edged sword.   It often makes it warmer in the winter than other areas but also makes for some very memorable snow events while the rest of King County has nothing.

Currently 34 degrees.
Snow cover is getting pretty thin but not bad considering we only had about 3” to start with.

Did it say you were "banned" or just a password issue?

I couldn't use "Poulsbo Snowman", nor would it accept my e-mail address.  Kept locking me out whenever I tried to log in.  I'm laying on my couch this morning with COVID, so decided to try to log in again this morning.  For some reason, it worked.  Bizarre stuff.

Yeah, I've had some issues too. I thought maybe I had been hit with the ban HAMMER. But no, just technical difficulties.
