On the weather front we had ice pellets a few hours ago. Currently 39 degrees.

Yeah, was going to say in weather related news I was in fife (yes sometimes they get interesting weather) and some pretty heavy hail moved through! Sun is out here in Tacoma now.

Any very chilly March’s during a Nino to Niña transition that come to mind?

1964 and more recently 2020 were both cool to cold, albeit with weaker Ninos.

Late March 1964 had a 12z Euro-esque backdoor blast into the northern Rockies. Gave Spokane some very late subfreezing highs on the 23rd- 24th.

1906 way before that was also a Nino to Nina transition with an all-time March airmass.

Seems like most of Poipu is doing pretty good now. Last time I was there was in 2015 and it was pretty nice. Stayed in the Marriott there. I will say there are Chickens and Roosters everywhere on the Island because the hurricane destroyed all the coops and chickens are basically top of the food chain there as there are no bears or cougars or anything like that.

Hard to sleep in there with the roosters crowing in the morning.  😀

Yeah it was entertaining watching them all!

Great tips, thanks everyone! Staying at Koloa Landing. I have a 3 year old so honestly half the trip is going to be spent in the pool since that's what she'll like. I'll definitely get up to Waimea Canyon...ideally I'll get a morning to go running up there since it looks like there are a number of decent trails. My wife gets sea sick so can't do boating unfortunately. Was planning on renting e-bikes since the kiddo likes riding on the back seat. I bookmarked Brennecke's...any other food recs?

Enjoy your trip, southern kauai is amazing for trail running. I recommend doing the kukui trail, and then go north up the Waimea Canyon trail once you reach the bottom of the canyon. Kukui is around 4.5 miles round trip, and you can add as many miles as you want to that by doing the Waimea Canyon trail with it, and turn around whenever you want.

1970 has been coming up as an analog from the 500mb perspective at least.

Just looked at March 1906 again.  Seven consecutive lows of 30 or lower in SEA, and three consecutive highs in the 34 to 38 range after the 10th.  Freeking impressive alright!

In these early season things the models often shoot too low.  Going to come down to how strong the offshore flow is.

Looks like some places this weekend could end up with a 72/35 type day or in that ball park.  These trough to ridge transitions can kick out some wild diurnal spreads.

Maybe the most dramatic example of a ridge retrograde that we've ever seen. Just a wall of easterly cold air advection as that ridge shifted offshore. And Portland's top dog of the 20th century as far as March is concerned. Managed a nice overrunning snowstorm with it on the 18th as well.

Fascinating stuff!

Looks like it turned warm and dry right after that cold spell during the last part of March and then April was very dry and warmer than normal in Seattle.    Then the bottom fell out again in May and June.

A sunny 53.4˚F for a high this afternoon. Great weather for moving.

Moving that has been complicated by someone parking in my reserved parking spot (deeded with the unit) at my Bellingham condo. Today I found out who it was.

And they were rather upset that I had parked in a way so as to box them in, and even more upset when I did not show much interest in moving my vehicle so they could get to work on time. Which I all find extremely odd — clearly someone who parks on other peoples’ private property should understand to the concept of parking thoughtlessly, shouldn’t they? Apparently not.

(I let them out… eventually. Waited for the cell call to their boss explaining that they might not make it into work to be made first.)

Wow!  As impressive as Seattle was it wasn't that insane.  31/22 is like a -18 to -20 departure for that date.  There were some lows in the teens in the EPSL, but the highs weren't below the mid to upper 30s.  I figured the cold must have come from the east, because it was so dry going into it.  This is almost at March 1870 levels of insanity, but that was a Fraser River event.

March 2019 was amazing.  I had a freezing wind come through here during the afternoon on the 3rd.  The temp rose to 43 in the late morning and then proceeded to drop to 31 while the sun was still up with strong east winds.  It then dropped to 23 for a low on the 10th, and then I had a ridiculous 76/59 day on the 19th.

I think there is more really impressive stuff to come before we get out of this amplified / dynamic regime we have been in for a while now.
